but not black tie optional??? I just got an invite today for 'black tie'
to me, that is retarded b/c now if DH has to go and rent a tux for like 125 or 150.00 bucks it is going to affect their gift!

anyone else??? I think it should say optional

I have to agree with Stef.....
I have been to a few 'black tie' weddings and a few that were 'optional'
At least with the 'black tie' - you knew.....with 'optional' you're never too sure....
I end up thinking, how many people will wear their tuxes...will FH feel out of place if he does/doesn't....

FH has a really nice tux, so that's never the issue with us, I would just rather know one way or the other....

Having the word optional at the end to me means simply put optional. But hence the wedding is more formal than your usual BBQ where you would throw on jeans or a sundress.

Some people NEED to know how formal a wedding is without telling them directly do NOT wear jeans or sneakers.
To me a night wedding is formal enough. Black tie or no black tie. I would wear a long dress either way. Plus short dressy dresses look cute on me. I don't like to look cute.
Tammy take it out of the gift if you want. I would.

I misread what stef said, I thought she said if it says just black tie alone it means optional as well ? I just think they have nerve b/c its not the fanciest place in the world! and should have been made an option b/c to go rent it is an expense and an annoyance

I think a good rule of thumb for black tie is:

A) if you are the bride/groom and dont mind if the amount of the tux rental comes out of your gift, then black tie is okay

But no complaining that people 'cheaped out' on you b/c its a big expense and aggravation to rent a tux so you should be willing to give up the money for it if important.

Thats just my opinion.

I think the people that dress inappropriately at weddings are going to dress inappropriately at a black tie wedding too. The only people you are encouraging to dress appropriately are those people that would have done so anyway. Because really, a person who goes out and rents a tux is not the guy who is going to wear jeans to your wedding if you didnt have black tie on your invite.

speaking of which...
it always amazes me how people dress at weddings.
i see everything from jeans & a flannel shirt to tuxes at saturday afternoon weddings!

i have worn the same dress to two different saturday afternoon weddings. at one wedding, i was the fanciest one there (which i actually don't mind at all- i'd rather be overdresses than underdressed) & at the other one, everyone else was fancier than me!

wedding attire is so strange...

I know someone who just bought a tux for about the same price it costs to rent one. He got it at K&G (I think that's what it's called). It's right off of Glen Cove Rd--Voice Rd I think? Right near David's Bridal in Carle place
