does anyone get annoyed when.......

you get invited to a wedding and it says black tie

but not black tie optional??? I just got an invite today for 'black tie'
to me, that is retarded b/c now if DH has to go and rent a tux for like 125 or 150.00 bucks it is going to affect their gift!

anyone else??? I think it should say optional
no??

Does he need to get a new one.. because it is actaully cheaper to buy one then to keep renting it... My DH had one but lost to much weight and since we have 4 more black tie weddings he fiwured it would be cheaper to buy one

well, he doesnt have a tux and we do not go to many black tie events lol
so it seems silly to buy one in our case
he may never wear it again

I think black tie optional/preferred is a better way to put it, because it tells you, hey buddy, dress up. But I think the only way a wedding should be black tie required is if it's at the Plaza on a Saturday night and the President will be there.

I was thinking of buying one for Joe - the one he wore to our wedding in matter of fact! We are always invited to black tie events, esp events and galas bc of my line of work and the people I deal with. The one he wore for our wedding was a Calvin Klein make and it was priced at like $400 I think? But yes, I think it should be optional.

I have never been invited to one, but would be annoyed, not knowing what to wear especially if it says OPTIONAL

Unless your Dad is a senator you should not be having a black tie affair. it is unfair to expect guests to purchase or rent attire for your wedding. i would probably not attend based on that requirement. It is one thing to want guests to dress nicely, it is another thing to demand what they wear.

Michele- I totally agree w/ you! But it is my cousins wedding and they attended mine so we have to attend......and neither his dad or hers is a senator!!
I think they should have had optional!!

Tammy, black tie means a lot of things now too. I mean, most of our grooms wore vests and ties....maybe he can get away with a really formal suit instead...and at least he can use it again? What are they gonna do...throw him out?

Black tie optional is just unecessary IMO. Black tie is always optional. You can wear a tuxedo to the supermarket if you want.

I would rather an invitation say black tie or say nothing. When it says optional I never know what to wear. About half the wedding I go to that have had black tie optional, no one wears a tux and the other half everyone does...so i never know whats appopriate attire for us until im already there.

Hmm. See I take it differently. When I see black tie optional, I see it as put on a floor length dress, or a kick ass hot cocktail dress, and hubby needs to wear a dark suit and really sharp tie. I see 'optional' as telling people you can't wear a sport jacket and khakis...

I guess it's in the eye of the beholder...

black tie

alone w/out optional means optional?? I dont know about that

Re: does anyone get annoyed when.......

No...just black tie means rent a tux. I'm just saying he can probably get away with a dark suit and sharp tie...because most tuxes look like that now anyway.

Where is the wedding?
