I am thinking of making a wall of pictures and not sure first where I should put it? Over the stairs? the Family room? the foyer? Then did you use the same style frames just different sizes or all different kinds of frames and different sizes?

Stef that is where I was really thinking of putting mine. Like I said though I don't know about the frames would you use different styles or the same frames just different sizes. I never seen anyone's look ug, they always look great, but I can't remember about the frames.

I love a picture wall but I'm in the same boat. My MIL has one now and I just think it looks so cluttered. It's in the hallway and everyone bangs into it constantly on the way to the bathroom. If anyone figures out a way to do this without it appearing to crazy I would love to know as well.

My mom has this along the wall of her staircase and it looks great. She has all different shapes/types of frames, and although they are not lined up perfectly, it still looks organized. She built this up over time.
I'd think it's probably easiest to hang up the larger pieces first, with a few inches separating them, and then find room for the smaller pieces to be hung randomly on the wall afterwards.
edited to add: I posted pics of my wall after I hung up all my wedding pics, but it's very symmetrical

My friend did this in her dining room above her sideboard and it looks AMAZING.
She collected black and white photos of her family and her husband's family. She put them in various old style frames and arranged them in a horizontal diamond shape.
I love the way it looks and hope that I may be able to do something similiar.

Re: Does anyone have a Picture Wall and if so...
i have one over my stairs. i have 8x10 pics of my fave wedding pix over every other stair. i have them in very simple metal frames. i alternated brushed silver and brushed gold. everyone compliments how it looks and tells a story. but this wall will be coming down soon to expand my LR so will have to figure out how to do a picture wall. thinking of making one in the family room over or around the fireplace somehow. (when we have our fireplace installed! ;)

I plan on doing this eventually, I love it! My friend has a pretty large picture wall in her family room and it looks great! You have to arrange the pics correctly in order for it to NOT look cluttered. She has different style pics and different frames. I plan on something a little different, I will be using all B&W's ... eventually
ETA: When I do do this, it will be in my family room behind my couch

I'd love to do this up my staircase as well and I like the idea of different frames and sizes, I love this idea.
I just think it looks neat and uniform, and I feel like I have a problem with things matching and going together.

stacedz - I like those frames! Are they from Pottery Barn? The color of the walls is close to the same color that I just painted my family room so those frames would look nice. I too am very anal about things being uniform and even .

Ann, I love that color, I bet it looks great, you should post pics!
Yes, they are from PB, I just saw them in their new catalog and I love them. I have a sage color above my stairs though and I don't think the black would go as nice as it does it that pic. I love the bold black, white, and brick red!

Re: Does anyone have a Picture Wall and if so...
One of these days I'll post a pic - right now the only thing we've done with the family room is paint it. We barely have any furniture, nothing on the walls either - it looks so boring! But I love the paint color with the white trim. I definately have to make a trip to Pottery Barn to get those frames. I think they'd look fine on a sage wall too.

I think frames that have similar style or finish work best together, but varied shapes & sizes make it interesting A good way to 'practice' a wall of frames is by purchasing all your frames-using craft paper or brown paper bags to trace them & cut them out, then use blue painters tape & postion them on the wall-you can move them around until you get it right, then hang the real thing. A tip for marking the spot where the nail should go is put a tiny dab of toothpaste on the spot on the frame where the nail will attach-then press it gently against the wall. I love the picture Stacey posted! Teri, where's that pics of you coming down the stairs on your wedding day? I think you can see the wall in one of them.

That sounds like a great Idea! Do you think the picture walls only work with Black and Whites? or do you think they would work with color if you didn't make it look to busy?
my mom has variety or frames and sizes of me and my sister going up the stairs...at the top is a section for graduation pics...
there aren't any b/ws...
her neighbor had 5 kids...and she has over her couch all b/w of her kids growing up all the same size...same frame...in a square
both ideas very different..but both look great...just depends on your style..

I am just now trying to figure this out for a hallway and up the stairs. I haven't had my photos up since we moved in January since I wanted to wait until we painted and I figured out how it would look best.
My grandma had one in her spare bedroom while I was growing up. She had 3 girls, plus us grandchildren. She had her children's communion photos in one row and under that their HS grad photos. Then around it were photos of us at various stages. It always looked very neat and orderly.

Re: Does anyone have a Picture Wall and if so...
I saw in a magazine where someone did their Bathroom all phot collaged..They changed them all into B&W pictures and used different times, their parents, B-parents and extended family. It came out lovely. My mother used to have a picture wall with different size frames, but she kept the color of the frames about the same. They were on the wall in our living room.
