FH and I are looking to get a dog (as soon as we move out of our apartment that doesnt allow them) and were thinking about getting a Yorkie. I can't believe he even agreed to getting one b/c his dream dog is a golden retreiver - but we live in the city and we have to get a small dog so we are considering a Yorkie. Can anyone tell me anything about them? Personality, temperment, how hard it is to train them? (I heard they are hard dogs to train). Any info would be greatly appreciated! Oh, and if you have one, can you post a pic??
THANKS!!

Re: Does anyone have a Yorkie?
This is so funny.. We just purchased a yorkie this past weekend... We are so excited. She is so cute.. now we just have to think of a name. We won't be getting her for another month since the place we got her won't let you until they are 12 weeks.. so beware of places that want to sell you one at 8 weeks.
I would definately do your homework.. We researched alot about yorkies and they are great for apartments, they don't shed, they don't need as much exercise, and they are great with children. They do need alot of attention when the are a puppy which is great since my husband works from home. They also need to be brushed at least once a day. Ours won't be more than 5 lbs...
Please make sure you that if you decide to get one that you get one from a reputable source....
Females are very high in demand and are hard to get so they might be more expensive...
Good luck...

My in-laws have 5!!! They sort of annoy me but I think that's because they are all together as a pack! There is one I really like though!! They are VERY yappy!!!!

Re: Does anyone have a Yorkie?
I have one. He is a male and just turned 3. It was a little difficult to train him but he now has very few accidents. He is very protective though about me and my mother. If either of us are holding him and someone comes near us he will growl at them although he has never bit anyone. He is great around children and doesnt need as much exercise as other types of dogs. Often I take him on walks and if I walk to far he gets tired and I have to carry him back home. When we bought him they told us he would weigh a maximum of 4 pounds and he now weighs 9. Here are some pics a posted a few days ago: Taylor

Re: Does anyone have a Yorkie?
I have a female yorkie teacup. She's very cute, very playful, and very friendly. She has a jack russel for a big brother, so she can keep up with playing with him as well. When she was a pouppy she oved to be in my mom's pocket. She's a great lap dog. She loves to just sit ther and be with you. Ours si spoiled. She was very sick when we got her and we had to force feedher, so she had gotten used to being fed. finally she got over that. Yorkies are very smart and the only reasona lot of them are hard to train is because they are so delicate (especially the teacups) that people don't want to discipline them, and the traditional choke collars, etc can hurt them. I love my little one. She can be a little yappy and annoying when we;re trying to eat, but she's very good otherwise, and if we keep her near us or give her a bone or greenie, she's fine. No complaints. GREAT city dog, especially the teacups because they don't need a whole lot of room to run around, unlike my frustrated JRT. You do need to take them out to run, etc, just like all dogs. I love them. And she doens't shed at all. We do have to brush her a lot (knots, etc) ad we wash her once a week. no problems. Love her. Oh and she's 15 months old.

I REALLY hope you are NOT getting one from a pet shop!!! please get your deposit back ASAP!!!! Read up on PUPPYMILLS and you'll see why... Also, that 12 week business is BS! Puppies are safe to go to their new home at 8 weeks of age, if they are completely weened. Some ppl PREFER to keep the dog til 12 weeks, but it is unessary if it is already weened. Some pups are lsower than others. Also, females are not more expensive because of a 'high demand' they are more expensive as ANY female of a breed since they can have puppies and make a profit.

Re: Does anyone have a Yorkie?
My mom was stupid and bought my dogs form puppy city. I yelled at her, but it was too late. Both came home very sick and the yorkie almost died. She was SO close to death many times. Luckily she's healthy now, but she does have problems with her legs. I dont attribute that to yorkies, but to puppy mills!

Re: Does anyone have a Yorkie?
Lolita-
my mom bought the dog at a puppy mill. see above. I never would. I know all about genetics, but that's what they're referred to as. And my mom already bought her and I love her. I would never have made that choice myself, but there you go. My mom really didn't know. She just thought the dog was cute

Aww I'm osrry to hear that It's hard b/c so little ppl actually know about puppymills. I have a feeling this HillandRob is getting from a pet store.. I try to get the message out.. At least your Yorkie is doing pretty good Unfortunatly not so many dogs are as lucky it drives me crazy!

Re: Does anyone have a Yorkie?
You wouldnlt believe how much I wanted to kill mom when she cma ehome with the dogs!! We're really anial lovers and we've taken in so many animals from the streets. My mom really didn't realize it, and she felt bad afterward, but, at least we nursed these little guys back to health. I won't even go IN a pet store that sells puppies.

Re: Does anyone have a Yorkie?
We didn't get our Yorkie from a pet store. I agree it's not a good idea to support puppymills.
The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America's ethical rules (http://www.ytca.org/ethics.html) recommend breeders should not give up Yorkies until 12 weeks.

Re: Does anyone have a Yorkie?
I agree- I got my Chihuahua from a breeder as well- I got her at 15 weeks and she was practically FULLY paper trained - at 6 months she has NO accidents.. she doesn't really bark a lot and she is MAJORLY socialized.. good luck!
But for a NYC dog, you might want to think about a fabulous Chi!- Here's a link to my breeder.
