Does anyone have United Healthcare?

Do you keep the 'Statement of Benefits' that you get after every visit to the Dr.? The one that says it is not a bill but tells you how much the plan paid and how much you paid?

I started keeping them when I started my job 3 yrs ago but they just sit there, and I don't know if I need to keep them.

Any one?

I work for EMpire BCBS...always keep all of the explanations for at least 3 years. If for some reason you get billed you have proof of what you have to pay...sometimes our records dont go back that far. Also...if you ever see a charge on their in the 'your responsibility' field ( above a co-pay or what not) and you question it..CALL the insurance company.

Sometimes when you are say..in the hospital and have some blood tests...the person who reads the results may not accept insurance and you will get billed. The only way to resolve this is to call your insurance company and tell them the situation...they will pay for it. A lot of people dont realize they have to call and questions things to get it billed. Insurance companies give you 180 days to dispute a charge, and after that , even if its their fault, you will be responsible.

I had United until recently and I kept them maybe 2 mos and threw them out. I only really kept them if there was something they didn't pay, or whatever. We never needed them. All of the information is available online, plus I'm sure if you ever did need them, they'd be able tp provide new copies. Anyway, if you do decide to keep them, i think one year is more than enough!

Very true about it being lnline..thats good, but no insurance may not be able to provide copies to you. I suggest keeping anything out of the ordinary. If it was a normal office visit, no biggie, if it was something bigger, hospital stay, MRI, etc...keep it for a while to be on the safe side.

I'm glad you asked, I get tons of these. Does anyone else keep prescription receipts (copays)? Not sure if I should trash those...
