Does anyone know about pregnancy and disability?

Original post by jpsgirl

For those of you who are pregnant and need to work full time - do you know anything about going on disability afterwards for a month or two? I have been told that post-partum is not considered a disability and you would not be entitled to any disability pay - but my husband says he called NY State and he was told that that is not the case, that you can get disability pay for 2 weeks prior and 4-6 weeks after the birth - has anyone looked into this? Thanks!

I was put out on disability 2 weeks before my DD, but since Gianna came early, I only was on it for a week. It was done through my company and I didn't have to do anything and I still got my full pay check throughout my whole time out. I got the 'normal' -- somebody really should do something about that because how on earth they can expect a woman to come back to work 6 or 8 weeks after giving birth needs a kick in the youknowwhat -- I'm guessing it was a man who made up that rule -- sorry, I went off on a tangent again.

Anyway, I got the normal 6 weeks for natural delivery, but was able to add on my 4 weeks of vacation that I saved. I could've added on any sick or personal days I had left, but I used them all up while pregnant.

Unfortunately for me, I work in a very small office - the doctors I work for have no supplemental disability insurance - I would get $170/week on disability, which would not even come close to being enough. I have two weeks vacation, and no maternity paid leave. So, it looks like I'll be going a month without pay and then rushing back to work. I am pretty bummed out about all this!
