Does anyone know anything about chicken poxs but the adult version

A guy i work with i found out this morning has chicken poxs but the adult version of it. So the entire office is lysoling everything. his office, our deks, anything this guy came into contact with. a few ppl shook his hand so they are all freaking out that if its contagious they are worried they'll get it.

Does anyone know anything about this?? is it very contagious?

Thanks

If you haven't had it already...it can be.

If you had it once as a child, you can't get it again.

chicken pox contagious regardless, unless you've had it before. It is possible to get it twice though. I'm not sure what you mean by adult version, I know it is absolutely HORRIBLE if you get it as an adult. I got it when I was 6, but I know some adults who get it, literally suffer!

FH NEVER had it! Neither did my grandmother!

I've had it before. I had chicken poxs when i was 10.

I think the adult version is worse then for children.

It's called shingles. It is only contagious if your touch the open sore. I had a co-worker who had them when I was pregnant and I freaked...but I asked my doctor and he siad you can only get in by being exposed to the person when they break out...not before. Hope that helps.

I never got it either and I am always around people who do...it's good and it's bad. I hear they are so much worse as an adult. A few years back I got a virus that was a strain of it and it was awful. It looks like chick poxs but it didn't spread as much but I felt like I had a horrible flu...couldn't move and very itchy! yuck!

My doctor recommended I get the vaccination they have for it. He said you wouldn't want to contact it if you were pregnant. I think the vaccination is only good for 5 years - or at least that's what he said..so maybe in the next year or so...

Chicken pox is highly contagious and is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It is transmitted by airdroplets, as well as direct contact, indirect contact is an uncommon cause. Patients that have chicken pox are contagious several days before the pox show up and continue to be contagious until the crusts on the pox form. The crusts are not contagious. The incubation period for chicken pox is 10-23 days. In adults that have not already had chicken pox the symptoms can be as mild as malaise to severe body, back and headaches.

In general if you have already had chicken pox as a child you will not get it again. Although, if you immunity level is low you can develop shingles. Shingles usually develops in the older population because of decreased immune system and decreased protection against varicella zoster.

Your office is doing the correct thing by cleaning everything off, very smart idea. If anyone is pregnant there they should report to employee health and call their OB.

Oh, no...not chicken pox

I had it a few years ago, and yes it is awful to get as an adult. I don't think I've ever felt so sick!

I've heard that the person is contagious from 24 hours before first pock appears until one week after last one has scabbed over. Incubation is 7-21 days (meaning it will take this long after exposure to come down with the chicken pox).

Good luck. I hope you don't get it!!!

ok. Thanks everyone.

Bali thank you very very very much for your detailed post. very helpful.

i know when i saw him earlier this week his face was all red and he looked like he was having a bad case of acne.

he left work early the other day as he said he really wasnt feeling good. I asked someone this morning how he is doing and thats when they told me what he had and started going on a lysol kick.

I really didnt have a lot of contact with him so i think i am in the safe zone. There are only 3 woman in my office and none are pregnant.

I am an RN at the hospital. In the past two weeks we have had an out break of Chicken pox among our adult pt population. As an adult, you can get the version of Shingles, but it can also come on like it did as a child. Shingles tends to only break out along one nerve tract and it will show up along your back or even legs in a straight row which is basically the never tract. When you see the pox breack out all over the face and all extremities, it is more like the symptoms of those in children. There is medication to tx it Acloviar. I suggest speaking to your MD if you haven't had the chicken pox. There is a vaccine avaliable these days.

wow i cant believe there has been a break out of it amoung the adults.

I've had chicken pox's as a child so i am not too worried. I feel so bad for this guy. He looked aweful the other day. I thought he was just stressed.

One woman has been walking around the entire office asking has anyone had chicken pox, if not have you had contact with this guy, if so you need to leave and go to the doctor.

I hate the winters, its always some type of sickness going around.

Hello I had the chicken pox when I as young...My mom had a great idea to have us play with our childhood friends because they had and we could get them and be finished with them.... Its not a great feeling to have them esp when you Get them ALL OVER>>>>> any way.. my sister inlaw just got over them in jan and shes 33, and she had them pretty bad. but I was really worried about my fiance, he didnt remember if he had them so I made him take a blood test to see if he was imunned. he hasn't got them yet...or he already had them.. best of luck...and take the blood test.

Even if you had it when you were younger, you can still get Shingles from it. So you are not totally in the clear. And I hate to scare people but I had it twice. My doctor said it is very rare but you can get it twice. The first time I got it, it was a very mild case and I was 16. The second time I was 20 and the specialist told me it was the worst case of chicken pox he has ever seen. If I were you I would call your doctor and see what he/she advises.
