I have had one before, but they're not recurring. I would suggest you start by seeing your doctor.... she/he can recommend the best course of action.

Good luck!!!!

I used to, then the doc gave me Xanax..

I get them but they have calmed down a lot.

They would cause me to stay home from work...I even left a wedding early once because of one.

It's horrible feeling, like you think you're having a heart attack. Now I just ignore them. I'd rather not take pills if I don't have to. I also don't drink caffeine anymore. Close your eyes and breath deeply....and keep yourself busy to take your mind off of it!

i had one or two of them this past year - it was my first year teaching in a new school, i had a really tough group of kids (and parents!), and then my brother in the marines got sent overseas to Kuwait/Iraq....I got migranes and started crying for no reason - and my blood pressure skyrocketed in a matter of minutes. It was really scary. I didn't go to a doctor about it because it didn't happen all that often though.

Re: does anyone suffer from panic attacks

me, my mom and my sister ALL got them!

i havent gotten them since i got my new job. the stress about a job really triggered them.

i learned how to just breathe and get thru it. i really didnt like having anyone around me at the time of an attack except my mom or sis.(prob because they understood it) and eventually my FH.

i think its best to realize that its a totally MENTAL situation. i used to think about how scared i was about stopping breathing..and my moms best advice was from her doc. if you DO happen to pass out, it would actually force you to breathe normally again because you wouldnt consciously be freaking out. if you want to talk about it more FM me.

you are NOT alone!

I'v had them and they are really scary. I went through a period when I was out of work, when I had a NIGHTMARISH month or so. I thought I was going to die. They still come and go. Your best bet might be to see a doctor. My FH also got me a series of tapes for those with panic attacks, a program for those suffering (he saw it advertised on t.v.) I haven't used them in a while but they were pretty good. (I'm blanking on the name right now) If interested, you can fm me for the name of the series; it was expensive though, at least a few hundred dollars.
They are a REALLY common thing! Hope you feel better and just try to relax (I know it sounds hard!)

Re: does anyone suffer from panic attacks

I started getting them when I was 17. I used to avoid places like crowds, elevators, any place where I felt trapped. Then it just kind of faded away by itself, and I was fine, until I was about 29. I had an EXTREMELY stressful situation in my life, was about to turn 30, and had lost a significant relationship. The panic attacks came back with a vengence!!!

What a horrible time in my life.

I went to the doctor, but they just wanted to give me Paxil, which is an antidepressant. I said, 'I'm NOT depressed...' I took one, had really weird side effects and said, 'Forget this! I'm going to find another way.' I knew medication was not for me, and that I needed to make some changes inside myself.

So I went for counseling (a panic attack specialist), and learned about how panic attacks are HARMLESS to your mind and your body. Yes, they feel horrible, but they can't hurt you in any way. What you fear about them (passing out, throwing up, heart attack, going crazy, dying, etc.) WILL NOT ever happen. I started to lose my fear of them, and also learned how to handle the stress in my life better. I also worked on learning to say NO! instead of trying to please everyone all the time. Worked on my self-esteem, too!

I'm happy to say, they are 99% gone from my life. I still occasionally get a mild one, but it's usually only when I'm under a lot of stress. I see them as a sign that it's time for me to take a minute, look at my life, my activities, my thoughts, and see where I haven't been good to myself or where I've been spreading myself too thin. It's just the way my body is wired. Some people get ulcers or high blood pressure from stress.... I get panic attacks. No biggie.

FM me if you want to talk.

The best way to treat them is to learn what they are, why they happen, and how not to fear them anymore. If you fear them, they will take over your life.

I had a couple (during the Macys fireworks in the city when I felt I was trapped in a mob of people and on a stalled subway)....it is a horrible feeling. My dad was a cop & talked me through it the first time....breathing into a paper bag helps too...It is important to concentrate on your breathing & know you are safe (keep telling yourself). It hasn't happened in a while, but seeing a dr. can't hurt.

Re: does anyone suffer from panic attacks

I dont get them and never have, but I know someone who does, and its become a very big part of her and her family's life.

I guess its hard for me to understand because I've never been there, because from where I see it 'She's fine' and it seems like she's always over-reacting to things, but apparently she truly feels this way and constantly goes to Dr's for them, and is never content with that she is told or what medication she is given.

I didnt know until recently about anxiety disorder and how common it is.

To anyone who has them, I hope you all find what you need to get rid of them and overcome them.

I used to get them from driving bc I was in a car accident a few years ago. I went to the doc and she put me on paxil. While it worked, I gained a ton of weight (which made me depressed) and was always tired. I went off of it and suffered through months of withdrawal, but now I'm feeling fine. I don't get them as bad anymore. I would talk to a counselor before using a prescription bc sometimes the medicines screw you up even worse. My metabolism is really screwed up now

Re: does anyone suffer from panic attacks

so i went to the dr. He prescribed Klonopin, Its a fast acting anti anxiety med that you only take for a short time. If that doesnt work I might have to go on a reg. med. See, I dont get the panic attacks at home very often. Mostly just at work when im sitting at my desk thinking about them. When Im at home I am busier beleive it or not. Maybe I should quit my job and find one that keeps me a little bit more busier. I wish !!

Re: does anyone suffer from panic attacks

Antoinette,

What are you thinking about when you're sitting at your desk?

Are you thinking stressful thoughts about the job? Are you thinking...' What if I get a panic attack again?' Are you watching your body carefully for the first signs that an attack might be coming? When you leave work, do you feel relieved and 'safer?' What do you do when you first feel the attack coming on? Do you say 'Oh No! Here is comes!!'

You would be so surprised at what a BIG role your thoughts play in the attacks.

I sent you FM!

After 9/11 I got them a few times, but I went to yoga and I am fine, I have not gotten them again. Thank goodness. My Gf gets them whenever she has to fly.
