I used to drive from Nassau to Westchester everyday. and i never minded driving. once i got moved to the city, i hated the lirr commute. now that i've got the hang of it, i really don't mind it. I sleep in the am and read on the way home. I don't worry about traffic or gas prices anymore. I think a lot depends on what time of day you will travel. my new job starts earlier and ends earlier than my last, and the difference in my commute is unbelievable (in terms of crowded trains, available seats, express trains)
For me, the salary was a big enough difference to make it worthwhile. But it's not for everyone.

If your commute is that long now then the commute to the city on the train will be easier because you can sleep instead of sitting in traffic. I sleep the whole way in and then read a book on the way home.
yeah I like the way that sounds LOL

Re: Does anyone work in Manhattan???
Just an FYI... you might make more money in the city... but its EXPENSIVE to travel there... from Mineola it cost almost $200 bucks... so I don't know what it is from Ronkonkoma! Just make sure you keep that in mind becuase I dont' know how much more you are thinking of leaving your job for...

Re: Does anyone work in Manhattan???
it depends where in Manhattan you work....the train comes into 34th and 7th. If you are midtown it should be fine. Preferably west. What is the address of the place in Manhattan? I'll tell you how big/small of a nightmare it will be.

Re: Does anyone work in Manhattan???
i commuted from bay shore (babylon station) for a while and honestly did not mind it that much, esp once i got the routine down. it makes it a lot easier if you catch an express though. the train ride actually gives you a lot of time to catch up on things since you're forced to put that time aside. it's also a lot easier if you work right by penn (or whatever stop you're getting off at), though the subways aren't that bad either but they were the ones that got to me.

I like in Queens too and take the LIRR for me its great bc normally my commute is close to two hours but from Penn station is 21 mins exactly. Also, alot of people at my job live in LI, and some in suffolk, they say it takes about an hour...With the LIRR its ok, you have comfortable chairs and its alot better
Yes Bayside is the best!!!
I actually am at the kew gardens station in queens

Re: Does anyone work in Manhattan???
I commuted to NYC for work for 10 years. I stopped last year. For 6 years, I worked 1 block from Penn Station, so it wasn't that bad. Then I worked downtown for 4 years. Although I loved the dowtown area, the commute was horrible, because a subway was now added. I was commuting from Hicksville. You have to always take into consideration the trains braking down. (then you have to stay to make up time). It seemed like always when I made evening plans, there would be a train problem. I had to switch most of my doctors to NYC. If you try to make an evening appt. on LI most docotrs appts are 7 pm. I think I had 4 dental appts on LI and each time I had to cancel and switch to a Sat. Don't get me wrong I LOVED working in NYC. It was a great experience and I have no regrets. I just got burnt out after awhile (I think it was mainly due to the subway). I now have a job 10 minutes from my house (where I only had to take a $2500 paycut, which came out to be the same because of the commuting costs). Whatever your friend decides, good luck to him/her.

Re: Does anyone work in Manhattan???
When I was working in Midtown I would take the train from Deer Park everyday....the monthly ticket was almost $300 and a metro card was $75...
I left my job in the city because of how much money it took to actually get to work, it wasn't worth it to me. The commute itself wasn't bad but I did hate getting home after 7pm everyday. Good luck!

Re: Does anyone work in Manhattan???
I interned in the city. Didn't really mind the commute. I was only 2 blocks from penn though, so I didn't have to worry about subways. That made it better. The one thing that kind of stunk was that I didn't have a set time to leave so I was always having to catch a different train and plan my leaving around that. Try to catch express trains when you can- much nicer and makes the commute seem faster!

Re: Does anyone work in Manhattan???
I used to commute from Massapequa to Penn Station....there was a time I hated it because you get up so early and get home so late.
But...when I started to take classes for my masters, I LOVED the time on the train. Cannot even tell you how much work I got done. Even if I had no work to do, it was still a great time to catch up on a magazine or just relax.
When I was student teaching in Queens, I would take the train to Jamaica and switch to the subway (E train). I always hated having to get off the LIRR cuz it's so much cozier than being on a subway train when you have no idea if you'll get a seat or not!
Basically my point is...after awhile, didn't mind the commute at all!!!

Ok just what I needd to hear. I would be commuting from Ronkonkoma so I just wanted to know how it is. Just 'thinking' of going to the city for more money.. I drive an hour.. sometimes an hour and a half now from Farmingville to Melville with all the traffic so I think the commute time might be the same. I wouldn't have to take a subway though cause its right by penn
Definitely worth it for the money then! Your commute will definitely be a lot less stressful! And it's better on your car, that's for sure!

to my ronkonkoma train buddy's...
honestly I have been commuting for about 10 years now and it is not that bad... in the beginning you might seem tired a lot but give yourself a month or two and your body gets so used to it! (It is a long day at first) but I would rather take the train than drive in bumper to bumper on the LIE...

Re: Does anyone work in Manhattan???
commuting from LI is no that bad but... see how far your office is from penn because that can add another 20 mins or so to your commute... also check out the train schedules to and how frequent trains are.. also as far as costss.. theres parking, subway and LIRR.. so it can add up!

Re: Does anyone work in Manhattan???
i commuted from Nassau this summer and if you live near the LIRR, then it's not too bad. you can park and ride at LIRR stations. if you don't live near the LIRR, then i'd say the commute isn't fun!!

Re: Does anyone work in Manhattan???
You do get used to it...I work in Jersey and at first I was like OMG that is too far, its jersey city which is just 4 mins from the path at WTC, and when i told everyone I was going to work in jersey city they thought it was crazy...At first it does take some getting used to, but it will quickly become normal and you get used to it. At first I was taking just MTA trains, and i would have to take 5 trains , coming home was the worst because everything is so delayed and it would take me about 2 hrs to get home...Then I started taking the LIRR from my house and now its alot quicker and so much easier...The LIRR is good for long commutes, you get nice and comfortable cushioned chairs, a head rest too lol, it even has a bathroom. Before you start doing it, it does seem annoying but if the job is worth it then do it and the commute wont be bad after the first few weeks or sooner
