Re: Does it 'really' matter...

well it depends for example my fh does not have as much family as me so I am going to have to put some of my friends on his side only because it will look really uneven I been to some weddings and have heard where it has not been as traditional as it use to be no one really pays much attention to what side they are on.. but I would not put any close relatives of mine on his side if you know what I mean (hope I made sense)

I can't do it that way in our RH room even if I wanted to b/c of the way it's set up. The dance floor isn't in the middle of the room with tables on either side, it's against the one wall with all the tables together. I really don't think it matters at all! Plus, my side has SO many more guests than FH's side so if we did that, it'd look totally lopsided

Re: Does it 'really' matter...

Traditionally, I think that the bride's family sits at table 1. We actually had both our parents at table 1. Most of my family was at the odd number tables on one side of the hall. We did this not because of tradition, but because not everyone could sit at one table and we wanted them to sit near each other.
But does it really matter - heck no!

We had my parents at table 1 and fh parents at table 4 maybe but it was just the way they were numbered.

Both parents were basically on either side of us

Ahhh so then that would make my way correct because my parents are at table 1.

My hall was kind of insistent on where the sides sit. I have no idea why though. I don't think it is a big deal but I DO think it is nice when YOU TWO sit at the head you should each sit on the same side of your family - I thought it was nice to do it this way even though I can't remember if we just sat like that or they placed us

Re: Does it 'really' matter...

I've heard that the grooms family and guest's sit on his side and the bride's family and guest sit on her side...birde's parents are always at table #1.

I say go with whatevr you want...we're doing it the way I just said since we have about equal numbers of people coming and I'm working on the seating chart with my mom and my FMIL is doing his sides seating chart.
