Does this sound fishy to anyone else?

Don's has a very expensive watch that I got him for Christmas a few years ago. Well on Sunday it stopped, so we figured it was just the battery. So I take it to a place near where I work. He tells me that its not the battery, there is something mechanically wrong with the watch and that its worth getting fixed. So he tells me to come back tomorrow (today) and he'll give me an estimate.

So today I go in and he tells me that the guy that gives the estimate on the expensive watches didnt come in today. So I asked him, cant you give me an estimate and he says no. But then he was like 'you want to get it fixed though right' so Im like yeah I want to get it fixed. So he tells me he was going to call me tomorrow with the estimate but he kept the watch.

I left leaving there somewhat uncomfortable, so I just called him now and told him that something came up and I wont be in the city for the rest of the week and I need the watch back.

I'm not sure that anything fishy is going on, but if you feel uncomfortable and you're getting a bad vibe, I think you should get the watch back and go elsewhere for the repair.

No No No... get that watch back.

It could very well be something mechanical inside the watch, but if you have to wait just to get an estimate then take your business somewhere else.

Did you get a warranty? If so contact them. If not, let me know - I know a great jeweler who can help.

Re: Does this sound fishy to anyone else?

I would ask him to put a new battery in it in front of you first so you know for sure, but I sure as hell wouldn't leave it if you feel uncomfortable.

Re: Does this sound fishy to anyone else?

I'd get it back... get a second opinion. Are they going to charge for opening it up? Sometimes they do because most of the work is in taking it apart and finding out what is wrong.

I agree 100%! Let him show you.

My FIL is a jewler and said that it does sound fishy. You could get a second opinion. NEVER leave jewlery with someone you don't trust. Go with your instincts.

Can you contact the manufacturer of the watch? My FIL does not deal with watches since it is such a specialty (mechanical and not diamond setting/designing like he's trained in) but when he has to with customers he has had for years, he just sends them to the company that made them (tells the costumer too that is what he's doing) and has them fix it.

Re: Does this sound fishy to anyone else?

I agree. It still could be the battery, it could be anything, I'd be really uncmfortable. Go to someone else you trust. I know a good jeweler in Ozone Park, who is really honest, etc. His father made my grandmother's wedding band in 1939, that's how long we've been using them...

Re: Does this sound fishy to anyone else?

ooooo noooo, I wouldnt leave it. I bought my FH a Breitling for christmas and it came with a warranty too, I'd be afraid to leave that watch anywhere alone. We bring our watches to Torroneau- dont know how to spell in roosevelt field. I only trust them
