Does Viennese hour kill the party?

Original post by rtbene2

Decision making time...

My FH and I are having difficulty deciding whether to do a Viennese hour. It is included with the price of the RH, but the band suggested that it might kill the party.

In favor of it:
-Come on, we LOVE all the yummies! My side of the family especially likes desserts
-It seems like the wedding cake might not be so great, so it would be nice to have other desserts for the guests.
-It looks nice/indulgent

Against it
-Are we there to eat or are we there to have a party?
-Aren't we eating enough already? A good amount of people don't even really want all lthat junk food.
-Will it take people off the dance floor into the adjacent room where the food is laid out? Then they will be sitting back at their seats insead of socializing.
-Do you really want to dance when you are that stuffed?

The RH offered to have plates of cookies and little pastries on the tables if we didn't do the Vennese hour, so the guests will at least be getting something, but I feel like that seems cheap in comparison to the amount you are getting for the Veinnese hour.

I seem to recall having more fun at weddings that didn't have the viennese hour...then again, maybe that was just because of whose wedding it was and the people there!

So...what is your experience at weddings with or without the viennese hour?

I think they are unnecessary.

i love the all the selections that are offered, but i've been to 4 weddings in the past year and a half that have had the viennese hour. 3 of the parties died out as a result of the VH. we opted not to have the VH, but did get ice cream and a chocolate fountain instead.

if you really want it, get it.

Questions:
Are there other sweets you will get with your cake? Like for my venue I recall that their will be some petit fours when cake is served.
Are there other 'dessert' options you can swap for the Viennese Hour? That is still a 'after dinner' sweets thing but perhaps not as involved as Viennese Hour so you still have something?

I do agree if it's included in the price already I wouldn't not take it. It'll be like throwing money away!

With our venue we had a free 'dessert station' thrown in and some of the choices were 'coffee and liquor', ice cream station and some others I can't think of now.

We went with Ice cream station because all the kids will love it. And really who doesn't love ice cream in the summer?

we had wedding cake, chocolate fountain, and a bunch of other pastries, cookies, cakes on the table....to me that was enough.

I went to DHs cousins wedding and IMO I think it did kinda slow down the party and people used it as a cue to start going home.

I n ever heard of a VH 'killing a party' but it has made a party!
if its already included in the price of your RH, i would NEVER get rid o it because then you will be losing money and food for the price you are paying and getting basically just cookies in its place compared to what you would get with a VH.
I don't t hink you should overanalyze what people will or won't do.
The Wedding cake isn't always that great and i have never had a wedding cake at a wedding. only the goodies at the VH - and honestly, i expect it. no matter how much i already ate, i want dessert! people are going to dance n omatter what and those that don't want dessert can continue to dance if they want to, the party won't stop just because dessert is laid out.

If it's included, then yeah you should take it unless you can get something equivalent for your money. But to me, the idea of gorging myself on desserts for an hour was more fun when I was like 12. Now, give me a nice slice of cake, a cup of coffee, and maybe a plate of cookies or pastries and that is MORE than enough.
