Does your boss have managerial skills?

Does your boss have managerial skills?

Mine is so-so. What I can't stand is she doesn't know how to put her foot down and say no it cannot be done today. Everything that is asked of her, everyone expects back today. Because she keeps letting people step all over her. Then she expects me to do these last minute projects and drop everything else that I need to do. Because she can't do it and promises someone it will be done today. HELLO!!! This morning I was ready to say: Get yourself a back bone and tell her we can't do it for today. Enough is enough already!!!
My daily saga....

Whoa! That sounds just like my FH's office. His group is the last to input data and they have to wait until they get it from other groups and he has to stay late and make sure it is done because the other people were late getting it to his group and his director says nothing and leaves at 5:30 (regular quitting time) while FH and his supervisor are there until 8PM.

FH would feel your pain

My boss is actually awsome. It's the owners of the company that are seriously lacking any managerial skills what so ever.

Why are they like this?
And forget about the VPs in this office. Its as if the minute they became a VP they became dumb! Seriously! I have never met more clueless people in my life that get paid alot of money to be stupid.

I'm not longer at my job but the person I use to work for directly was so passive aggressive. But he was actually a really nice guy and I knew the deal so it didnt bother me. The head of the dept. was a very smart very successful investment banker but he was such a micro manager sometimes that while he was very good at what he did, he wasted lots of people's time on things he really didnt utilize. Yeah, everyone was getting paid but it make it hard to feel enthusiastic at times when you knew your energy was devoted to something useless.

ummm not really...and WE get criticized because we MANAGERS don't seem to know how to do our job accding to her. menawhile she has never had to do our job...so she is very unfamiliar with the processes...she is a big picture person

my bosses are total idiots, mostly. my immediate supervisor is a nice guy and would probably make a fun friend, but he can't manage for ****. he's really passive aggressive which drives me nuts b/c i hate people that beat around the bush. the next higher up from him is completely unprofessional. he's been telling everyone not to listen to any of my ideas or pay any attention to me, b/c i MIGHT move to NY sometime in the future. i've never given a firm date, but i've let them know that i'd like to move (mostly i told them b/c of training issues). anyway, he's also spreading rumors that i've already resigned. total jerk!

Re: Does your boss have managerial skills?

Luckily I work with a stafff of fabulous women, but at my FH;s job that is another story.

He despises his direct boss and he is always complaining that the VP of his department is a spineless wimpy woman with no backbone.

He feels she lets people step all over her and that she is not ambitious or motivated.

Re: Does your boss have managerial skills?

my one boss at Amex Megan was the best. She was like a friend then a boss. If you needed something done she would go that extra mile to get it done. She would always want to keep the lines of communication open. If I wanted her to proof read something for me befor I sent it out, no matter how busy she was she would always do it for me. I think a lot of bosses could learn from her

Then my other boss Shelley was so horrible. The day they had to lay off 15 members of my group (myself included) she was on vacation and wasnt coming home till the day after, so she layed everyone off by phone. Yup she called everyone individually and as she sat by the pool she told all of us we were layed off. Great boss that was. Then thought by making it up she bought us all lunch. She had no clue or sympathy.

My old boss at BlackRock I wish would rot in Hell. Nuff said on that one

Re: Does your boss have managerial skills?

My previous boss at this place is awesome. That was when I was in another department. My current one I shouldn't bash too much b/c she is a very nice woman. Very understanding if I have to leave last minute which is rare, or need a day of just b/c.
But she doesn't say no to anyone pertaining to work. She never says no that isn't possible. Then she starts bit$hing why does everyone think we have nothing else to do but wait for their phone calls? Well b/c YOU let them do it! YOU let them take advantage of you and then complain to me. But then we have to do the work anyway.

I work for lawyers...I haven't met one yet with managerial skills. My boss now micromanages and is a pathological liar. If you write 2 in the address instead of TWO, he flips! Most of the lawyers I've worked for are micromanagers and don't know how to do much more than antagonize everyone around them. Yay, what a joyous work experience I have!

Re: Does your boss have managerial skills?

This is a great post - I find that many managers are peole who were formerly 'brown nose' types who are promoted and then continue in that way, except now it's their staff that has to come through in unreasonable expectations.

My manager is a techno-phobe. I have no idea how she has managed to not get fired.

I think managers whould be evaluated by their staff - does anyone's job have that (I think it's called 360 evaluation)?

Re: Does your boss have managerial skills?

No, he really doesn't, although I do love working for him. He doesn't coordinate plans with the assistant managers, so everything that gets done is either all for nothing, or not what he wanted. Thankfully, I run my department well, so he leaves us alone

If she was there more than she's not she would be a good manager!
