DH and I are planning on getting a puppy very soon. However, we are having difficulty agreeing on a breed. We know we want a purebreed from a breeder. We need something that can be happy in our apartment. What we agree on so far is it needs to be short-haired, intelligent, and medium to small. I'd love to hear any suggestions!
ETA: DH also made it clear that he does not want to be embarrassed walking it, so I guess it needs to be a 'manly' dog!
future in laws just got a tibetan terrier and she is a DOLL!!!!!! i love her soooo much.
<---------------- Charlotte.
the breed is incredibly smart, agile, funny as heck, small to pick up but still large enough that you don't step on them, they are good for people with allergies b/c they have 'hair' like english sheepdogs. when the hair is clipped, they look like terriers. when the hair grows, they look like a mix between an old english sheepdog and a cocker spaniel. they are not terriers, they just have that name. they are so alert and really smart. they are like lhasa apso's but bigger.

OMG Violet that is a bordeaux mastiff...I love that dog. I have a mini pin and a boston terrier. The mini pin is almost three years old and came with my FI, though, now she is sleeps everynight next to me. The boston terrier is about four months old and such a schmoopy head. I love her to death and she is the cutest thing ever, she snuggles all of the time. The mini pin (Vegas) barks non-stop but is such a smart dog. My Boston terrier (Nellie) never barks and has such a big head that we call her big ears or big head. I really love all dogs...labs are great and my family dog is a golden retriever. I would love to get a great dane eventually or a mastiff. You just have to see what dog will be good for you. I heard that french bulldogs and boston terriers are really good apartment dogs. Good luck...you have to show us pic's of your puppy if you get one.

<---------------- Bruno may not be a manly looking dog but his attitude definitely fits his name. Yorkies don't shed & he obviously has plenty of room in our apartment. He fills the need to have a baby since you can carry him everywhere but he'll also rip your hand off if a guy wants to play rough.

Re: dog breeds
here is my dog ashes...he is a siberian husky he is 10 years old and i got him at , siberian husky of central maine...when i got him he was about 2 years old and about 45 pounds now he is 87....big boy..most only get to be 50 or so.....
We looked into Jack Russells, and my only concern is the amount of energy they have. I was told that they are VERY hyper. I'm not sure that that would be good in an apartment. We both like them though.
THEY ARE!!!! Murphy is my best friend but forget about ever coming home and plopping on the couch! No way! I miss it sooo much. They are crazy little dogs but it gives them personality that is amazing.
or a long hair chuhihua ? <--------------- That's Luigi!

I have a Jack Russell and a Teacup Yorkie, both in a Queens apt. They're both happy, but VERY energetic. The JRT is my dog. He's extremely firnedly and intelligent, was easy to train (he aims to please, SO much...whne he pees outside he looks at us, waiting for praise) Both breeds are a little destructive when frustrated (I think this is true f any dog) esecially if they don't get exrcise, but I find that with both dogs, even half an hour running aroun the house makes them happy. And I bring the JRT to puppy school once a week. He's VERY rambunctious. He cna jump 4 feet in the air and grab things off the table. If I turn my back I find him sitting on my chair eating my salad. I think it's worth it b/c he's SO friendly and adorable, but it's REALLY taxing. The Yorkie is less work in some ways, more work in others. She's actually gotten itno the habit of chewing our walls now. She also won't eat uness you hand feed her. She's VERY stubborn and my mom won't discipline her because she's so small and fragile. I love my JRT, and it can be done in a small space, but with any dog you need to take them out for a brisk walk or elt them run around at least once a day or else they get frustrated.

I have a westie and shih tzu. I think that westie's are a great compromise b/c they are small, yet they act big and are so much fun. They are all so sweet too! Mine can be a lap dog one minute and so playful the next. She sleeps a lot during the day, so she's fine in the apt.
