Dog Day Afternoon - Golem's first trip to the dog park!
I'll just start this post by saying one thing:
COINDRE HALL IS THE BEST DOG PARK EVER!!!!!!
Yesterday we took a trip to Huntington so Golem could play at the Coindre Hall dog park and what an amazing day we had!!! Golem was SO HAPPY and was running all over the place giving people kisses and eating snow!! He was a little timid with the other dogs at first since he was the new kid, but he made friends after a while and by the end of the day he was running around with the other pups and was greeting all the other new kids as they came in too!! We had such a fun day - everyone was so nice there too - we were talking to all the other dog parents and they were all so friendly and everyone fell in love with our puppy!! One guy was even taking pictures of him the whole time!! Golem really made his mark (literally!!)
I was a very proud mommy yesterday to see my little guy playing so nicely with the other kids - even though he took a little while to warm up to them at first! He made friends with a year old Boxer pup who kinda took Golem under his wing - looking out for the new kid and showing him the ropes! It was amazing to watch all these different dogs just playing together so nicely. I just wish we brought our camera - I'll have to remember for next week so I can share some pics here! We were there for over two hours and little Golem was so tuckered out by all the excitement that he fell asleep on my lap the whole way home He was pretty sleepy for the rest of the evening too, he was a tired puppy!
What a wonderful dog park - Craig and I are going to take him there every weekend as long as the weather is nice enough! Such a fun day - just wanted to share Golem's latest new experience!

I have heard so many great things about this dog park and we really want to take Satchmo, but I was afraid he was a little young. Does Golem have good recall? Satchmo comes when I call him, if he wants to, so I wasn't sure about taking him. I was also wondering about the other dogs. I have heard that they're friendly, but was still concerned that Satchmo may be too little to play with the big kids. How old is Golem now?

Golem is 5 1/2 months old now - and his recall is very good! Actually, it was a little too good at the park yesterday - we were trying to make him go AWAY from us so he could play with the other dogs, but at first, he was very clingy to us, not straying at all! He has a great recall though - we even tried it out amid all the distractions at the park and I went to the top of the hill and called him - he came bounding up to me! We just took him now bc he had his last set of shots a couple of weeks ago. Golem was good with the other dogs - it taught him a little humility too, he submitted to the first doggy who wanted to play So we aren't worried now about our Rottie displaying dominant tendencies - he was such a wuss at first! All the dogs were off leash for the most part, but there were a few dogs there who leashed too. And dogs of all sizes were playing together - we meet a 200 pound Newfoundland who was playing with a little German Shepard puppy! I recommend it - it's so great for them!!

Sounds like a fun day! Is that one fenced in?

it's not fenced in - but it is lined with trees all the way down the hill. It's nice and open - lots of room for all the doggies to play!

Satchmo is 4 1/2 months now. He has all his shots, except rabies. We will definately take him to the park as soon as he gets that shot. He was kind of shy during his first puppy play session at puppy kindergarten last week, so I really want to socialize him with other dogs. He is great with people, but now we need to work with dogs.

Golem is the same way - great with people, but a little more hesitant with other dogs. A few people we were talking to at the park said that's normal for their first time around other dogs though, especially since there were 10 dogs all at once who wanted to play with him! We figure if we make a habit of bringing him there - he'll be a pro in no time

Wow, that's great that Golem had a good experience at the dog park. It's a great way to socialize him! Bama's first trip to the dog park wasn't as good; he was only 4 months old and very skittish. He wanted to play so bad - he'd watch the other dogs run by and almost join them, but then he'd stop and hide between my legs But it was just a fear period for him luckily. Now we practically have to drag him out of the dog park!

We want to go again this weekend - it's supposed to be really nice, and now that we know he's so good there - we want to take him as often as we can!! I will let you know when we are going - that would be fun if we could meet up sometime!
You are soooo lucky to live so close - your dog must LOVE that!! I would bring Golem everyday if I could

that's so funny! We just started walking Golem around the neighborhood a couple weeks ago - and he does the same thing now. We say wanna go for a walk? and his ears perk up and he runs to get the leash!
There isn't much snow left - I'm sure more will be gone by this weekend too since there were lots of kids sledding down the hill when we were there. We're in East Meadow - it's about 20 - 25 minutes from Coindre hall. That sleepy puppy on the ride home is worth every second too!
