Dog owners - need help please

Dog owners - need help please

My dog has peed 3 times in a row on the same spot on my brand new rug & it always early in the morning. I don't know what to do with her. We have only had her over a week. I know she is trying to get adjusted but I cant have her doing this. She is a very scared little dog - she is just starting to come out of her shell.

She is a year old - should I get a cage for her?

Suggestions welcomed

the fact that she is peeing in the same spot is because she smells her pee there so it's a familiar thing for her.....

is she house trained or paper trained???

she does need to be scolded for peeing on the rug....you need to clean it with something from a pet store that neutralizes her scent.

You can't scold her unless you catch her in the act. When you catch her- clap loudly and say no- rubbing the nose in it doesn't work.

I would say, even though she is a year old- you should be crate training her like she was a puppy. Obviously she needs to go in the morning, so take her out of the cage and take her out (or to the pee pad) whatever- but don't let her free to roam the house until she's gone.

Also- get yourself some Nature's Miracle from the pet store to get the pee out the carpet- that's the only way the smell will come out- regular carpet cleaner doesn't work.

good luck!

She's right... and to add, again when I adopted my dog, she did this too. Unfortunately it is all part of the adjustment to her new home and family.

Big ditto on the Nature's Miracle.

It took a lot of time for our two dogs to become house broken...longer than usual for some reason.

Anyway, we always crated them at night...and now they LOVE their 'snuggle shack'...honestly!
Right now they are sitting in there and they won't come out until they feel like it.

Thanks so much everyone. I was feeling bad aobut putting her in a cage but now I am going to get one. She needs to learn.

don't worry about crating them- dogs are den animals- and the crates quickly become their dens or their rescue... just don't use the crate as a punishment place- but rather a safe & relaxing place... let the dog sleep there at night and be in there when you aren't at home...put when you are home- make sure the dog is out of the crate (leave the crate door open so s/he can choose to go in)...

just like a puppy- you're going to have to follow the dog around or keep it in the room with you- it will have to be monitored at all times until you can 100% trust it.... that's what I did w. my chihuahua puppy.

with my nephews running around the house....our dog (at 2 1/2 yrs old) will go into her cage to get away from them, she will also go nap there while we watch tv, and when she does get in trouble, she knows to go in there for a TIME OUT (she jumped up on the table last night)

We used Wee Wee Pads with a lot of success. I didn't want to crate my dog, so we picked up the Wee Wee Pads. They somehow attract the dog to pee on them instead of the floor or rug, so you put him in whatever area he is going to be in and slowly move them towards the door until you can move them outside and he knows to pee there.

I swear, he never peed anywhere but the Wee Wee Pads after I started using them and he was housetrained in about 2 weeks.

What our dog trainer recommended (Marilyn from Alpha Dog trainint) was to take them outside as often as possible, like every hour (this is just for the initial phases of house breaking). When they do eventually go to the bathroom outside, you praise the heck out of them, possibly even give them a biscuit (our dogs get a biscuit when they return to their crate, only after going to the bathroom outside).
It worked for our dogs.

Another trick is to use Vinegar (white) to take out the odor in anything. First use a Paper Towel to soke up the urine and then pour some vinegar on it and rub the vinegar in with your hand. If you can place 3-4 paper towls under the stain and two Paper Towels on top. This enables the odor to move upwards. I even use vinegar to wash clothes with especially when smoker were in the bar.

I also have had good luck with crating and using wee-wee pads. We buy them in bulk from Petsmart.com

Good luck with your new dog. Sheeba Inus are great dogs. They need A LOT of TLC because they are normally 'scared' or timid animals. Be patient. It will all work out!

My german shepherd used the wee wee pads as a chew toy....we basically took him out every hour until he peed outside...then praised him like crazy....it worked in about 2 weeks......

I wouldn't feel too bad about the cage. DH's Husky still uses it (her choice)!

i also agree about the nature's miracle, but if that doesn't work, sprinkle some pepper on the spot... that should do it.

also, and I know this stinks, but try to wake up a few minutes earlier to try & catch her in the act. That is the only way you can effectively punish her.

Good Luck!

Thanks for everyone advice. I spoke to Kathy116's DH (who is the nicest man) about Sandy. We are def getting her a cage/crate and he said that she may have a urine infection. She peed again on the rug but I didnt catch her. I am not sure if she is trying to wake me up and I don't hear her. I used Natures Miracle - so far so good.

Anyway I was out with her at 5 am and she did both. This is almost like having a baby.

Re: Dog owners - need help please

We will soon be dog owners, but I just wanted to agree with all the previous posts about crate training and the neutralizer Nature's Miracle. Just about every book DH and I have read about dog training has highly recommended both of these - and we plan on using them too when we get our little guy in October (Baby Rottie on the way! )

Also, if you are really worried, you should give your vet a call just to be on the safe side. Keep us posted!
