hey so i was wondering, if you had your dog spayed, how was the recovery process? when did she seem totally free of pain? when did she get her energy back? when was she completely back to normal? i got my dog spayed today, and i'm worried about her. would love to just get some other people's experiences. thanks!! also, do you think it's really irresponsible of me to have done something like spay my dog less than two weeks before my wedding? i know it's really a useless question since it's already done, but my in-laws are telling me i'm awful for doing it, and part of me understands their point of view...so i just wanted to know what others thought.

Re: dog people?
It took ours about a day and a half. Don't worry, its normal for her to be lethargic and not herself after the surgery. Give her a day and a half and she will be back to normal! No worries!!!
BTW, you're not awful for doing it! Its healthier for your dog to be spayed!

Why would that be irresponsible?? Your pup will be fine in no time! I have a boy dog, but when I got him 'fixed' he was so out of it the first night. second day a little better, and by the third or fourth day much better. We were trying to limit his activities so he didn't rip his stiches, but about a week after, he was back to his crazy self!!! HTH

stop stressing! she'll be fine. dogs are resilient - they bounce back in no time.
i don't think it's a big deal - she won't even remember all of this in two weeks. and she'll be back to herself.
good luck!

I haven't had a dog young enough to be spayed in a really long time. However, I know that my cats were always back to normal within a day or so, if that helps at all.

I don't think it's bad that you did it so close to the wedding. It's better than not doing it. As for recovery- a day or two. The first day was awful- he just cried and cried if I stopped petting him and wouldn't eat or drink. The next evening the stupid conehead was back to normal. Your dog will be just fine.

That's ridiculous, it's responsible to get a dog spayed in the first place, and she will be fine in two weeks. It was harder to keep my dog calm in order to let her heal, she wanted to jump all over the place a day or two after the surgery. My male dog had a hard time after he was neutered but he needed extra claws removed from his legs so that made it worse, and even that he was better in like a week and a half. It will take a few days but she should be feeling better soon, you are not a bad dog mommy, don't listen to them!

Re: dog people?
I have a bulldog and my vet kept him overnight after we had him neutered. Bulldogs can have bad reactions to anesthesia so my vet likes to monitor them over night. When I picked him up the next morning he was perfectly fine. No complications, and was right back to his normal self. I was kind of hoping he'd be a little tired, lol, but he came home ready to play. Don't worry, your in laws don't know what they are talking about, you did the right thing.

Its fine that you got her spayed two weeks before the wedding. How is that even relevant to the wedding? She will be fine in a few days.
When I had my dog spayed she came home and was shaking so much and just sleeping the first whole day and night. I was so concerned ... The next few days she was a bit lethargic but thats to be expected. After a few days she was back to herself, running, playing .. she was fine.
Your dog will be fine. You have nothing to be concerned about.
HTH!

your dog will be fine! all dogs have different experiences depending on the stiches. my dog, marshall, didn't have stitches (i think they used stich glue? i don't remember though), so he didn't have to wear a cone. he was back to his crazy self within a day.

Re: dog people?
when my dog was spayed they said that she may be sleepy and out of it. She was anything but. when i picked her up she came walking out like a champ - she was fine. make sure she doesnt jump & takes her medicine. As much as she wanted to act normal we had to make sure she healed correctly.

Re: dog people?
I dont see why it would be an issue.... tell them to MYOB...
Jessie had to stay over night... but she was a little groggy for a day or so... then after about 3 or 4 days she was normal... You just have to make sure you keep an eye on them. If they dont eat or drink or go to the bathroom normally after 3 days then call the vet...

Re: dog people?
Thank you SOOOOOO much!!! You don't know how much better this makes me feel. This has been the craziest experience for us, because my FILs are SO against spaying in general, and we basically rushed into it because we didn't want her to have her third heat because I heard that really increases the risk of breast cancer. Basically they're telling us it's irresponsible because we're going to be all over the place, and then going on a honeymoon, and what if something happens and who's gonna take care of her and blah blah blah. But thank you SO much for all the kind responses.

when we had Roxy spayed she stayed overnight in the hospital. I picked her up the next day and she was a little lethargic but after another day she was fine!
