Yeah, you get to keep the money The times I've seen it done the bride gets on the dance floor with a 'money bag' and basically the guys line up to put money in the bag to dance with her for a few seconds. They usually put in a couple of bucks but sometimes it's substantially more -- some people put 20s.
This is the TACKIEST thing I have ever heard!
I couldn't imagine asking my guests for cash and then scrambling around the dance floor to pick it up

I've seen it at many weddings, but I'm still debating on doing it or not.

Re: dollar dance
have seen it done at one wedding and I thought it was very tacky and thought it could make people uncomfortable.
Basically how this couple did it was, the DJ got everyone on the dance floor and made a circle around the couple. The couple had to go around the circle in opposite directions and the groom had to kiss every woman and the bride kissed every man who then stuck a dollar or whatever in her dress. No one had a clue this is what was going to happen so the men were scrambling for their wallets.
The bride was literally pulling wads on $$ out of her dress by the fists full. I am making a point to tell my DJ absolutely NOT, I wouldn't be comfortable doing thishave seen it done at one wedding and I thought it was very tacky and thought it could make people uncomfortable.
OMG this makes the bride sound like a STRIPPER!

LMAO!!! It's not like they THROW it at the bride!!! You just gave me a funny mental picture with that comment!!!
This is a big thing in other parts of the country... it's considered a tradition and everybody does it, believe it or not... it is not unheard of in NY but it's much rarer here than in middle America and the South. We have to remember that sometimes there are severe regional differences in weddings in this country and what is or isn't considered tasteful, so let's try not to judge too harshly
(BTW, I'm not doing it...but I know that some girls on here are and I don't think that just because we've never heard of a tradition or custom, we should judge it and possibly make them feel bad, that's all)

Tacky as it may sound, dont knock it unless you've seen it. I've been to pleny of weddings where this is done, and I didnt find it the least bit offensive. I made it a point to dance with both the groom and the bride!! Yes, there is a dollar involved, but it's fun to get the chance to dance with the bride and groom since they are stuck having to greet everyone at their table all night. And no, you dont stuff the money down her dress like a stipper. There is small satchel the bride holds. IMO if you want to have it, go right ahead. If you dont that's fine too.

Re: dollar dance
Well I'm not Greek but FH is and the weddings that I have been to on his side they do the traditional first dance to greek music and everyone goes up to the bride and groom and throw wads of singles at them. I wanna say the average person throws anywhere from 20-50 singles and then the parents throw a little more. After the dance little kids run out to the floor and either pick up the money by hand or with a big dust broom. But the catch is this moneys goes to the DJ or BAnd. The bride and groom get none of it. It is the tip for the band.
Maybe one of the greek girls on here will explain the meaning of this.

z100 was talking about that last weekend. I was dying, that is just too tacky. you have to give a gift and bring money too.
'tacky'
Actually it's very common in other parts. I have never been to a wedding WITHOUT a dollar dance.
*shrug*
Then again I find the idea of checking on who shows up to my wedding or not (no-shows), who gives a gift or not and other things that 'NY' does to be a bit uhmmm 'different' than what Im used to. That's a nice way of saying it.

I've seen it done - more than once - so I gave my honest opinion.
There was no satchel involved any of the times, there was stuffing of $$$ down her dress and in his tux (the one's I saw involved the groom as well), there was a mother with a microphone PIMPING her daughter (yes, the bride) off to the highest bidder and it was all, damn TACKY.
ETA: Even if it was done 'tastefully', I still find it tacky to line people up to charge them to dance with the bride - especially since most of them gave a shower gift and now a wedding gift - and in some cases, an engagement gift. I see no further reason to solicit $$$ from guests.

Re: dollar dance
OMG what a BAD view the dollar dance has around here.
The ones I've seen point blank TELL the crowd, if you'd like to dance with the bride or groom here's your chance, the traditional dollar dance. two chosen people stand and collect while they send folks out to dance with the bride and groom. It's not REQUIRED.
I had this at my quincequera (sp) 15th birthday. $20, $50, $100 are offered over the $1. Sometimes it's just a chance to say 'hi, congrats' to the bride or groom.
I've been to several where I never danced with either. And I've been to a few where you feel bad for the bride and groom having to be forced to dance that long non-stop. It's a fun way of getting everyone involved. Also takes care of the Bride/Groom obligation to talk to everyone in the room.
I've NEVER seen people SHOVE money down the bride's dress. Nor have I ever seen the kissing circle thing described. The Dollar Dance is just that. A respectful dance. The only variation I've seen is the moneybag she holds (which is bothersome) or people pinning the money to her train.
As far as I know it's big part of the Hispanic Traditional wedding. Not at all considered 'tacky' by most who honor it.

Right on Xelindrya!! I was thinking the same thing as you. Just because it is not an accepted act by someone else's 'standards' doesnt mean it's should be labeled 'tacky'. Let's all try to be a little nicer when passing judgement. I was a bit offended to hear that my friends and family were 'tacky' for having the dollar dance.

I agree with you ladies. The dollar dance as I have seen have been very tasteful. No stuffing $$$ down the brides dress ........thats more of a personal issue that the bride has with her guests who would try to do that in the first place.
I DECIDED TO DO THE DOLLAR DANCE AT MY WEDDING JUST BECAUSE OF THIS POST I will show LIW brides that the $ dance can be done in the manner it was sopposed to be......FUN yet tasteful.........This is not to say that I will charge to dance with m. whomever comes to dance $$ or not......I will :)

I agree - I dont know if we will do it or not but there are many ways to not make it tacky.. first of all I never heard of lines to do this.. the bride and groom dance and the dj announces.. this is the dollar dance if anyone wants to participate.. no one is forced too.. I even saw one time a groom wearing a sign on his back that said come on I just paid for your dinner and it had change glued to it.. people dont throw the money or stuff it in your dress.. they stick it in your money bag..

I really dont know what the meaning of this is but its like you are showering the bride with good fortune. The money does not go to the couple though - it goes to the band like you said. In fact my band contract specifically states that any money that is thrown goes to the band.

I agree with you guys. There is too much use of the word 'tacky' around here. I know its just peoples opinions but can't you give your opion without passing judgement?
An opinion is valid...whats tacky to one person is not to another and I think can hurt someone's feelings unintentionally.
As for the 'dollar dance' I too have only been to a few weddings where the DON'T do it, I always thought it was cute. It only lasts a song so what does the bride really get...a few dollars...

Re: dollar dance
Wow! Some really strong opinions here on this one. The dollar dance is not that common in NY, but its considered weird not to do it in other parts of the country like the Midwest. I went to grad school in Chicago and my roommate who was from rural Illinois was shocked that I thought the dollar dance was a little outdated since 'Everyone Does it!!' (I have since gone to several weddings where the bride tied a white apron around her waist to collect her dollar dance money!!!)
She also thought it was odd that anyone would have a cocktail hour with a big buffet before a sit down dinner 'that's like 2 meals' and that there would be an open bar for the entire reception. 'Kind of pretentious to spend that much money on a wedding unless you're a celebrity!'
Wedding traditions are totally different in different parts of the country and in different ethnic/religious groups. Personally, I won't be having the dollar dance, the garter routine, or the bouquet toss, but I know lots of people don't consider it a wedding without those things.....
