In Poland, a 'money dance' is a tradition practiced at the reception. This is usually not held until the guests have eaten and the other ceremonies have been performed. The guests will either pin money to the wedding dress, or the Maid of Honor will wear an apron to collect the money, to 'buy a dance from her. These gifts of money are usually used by the couple towards their honeymoon expenses.

After all who want to dance with the bride have danced with her, a tight circle is formed around her, and the groom then tries to break through the circle, while the guests try to keep him out. Once he has broken through, he picks up his bride and carries her away from the wedding reception to start their new life together.

In a variation of the 'money dance,'' the bride will dance with her father while a relative holds out an apron. The guests who place money in the apron will win an opportunity to dance with the bride. After most or all of the guests (can be both men and women) have danced with the bride, the groom will throw in his wallet, which surpasses all the other contributions. He will then escape with his bride to their honeymoon.

Nope, didnt do it at my wedding.
IMHO I think its unfair that your guests give you money as a gift (most guests) then you are basically asking for more-aging JMHO

I agree with Pega. I am sorry if I offend anyone, but generally when the dollar dance is discussed among my personal group of friends and family, it is regarded as tacky. I think more people are moving towards the anniversary dance instead.

What's the anniversary dance?

Re: Dollar Dance??

I had never heard of it until I moved to NY, but this is what it is:

The Anniversary Dance starts with all married couples at the wedding on the dance floor. The MC then asks everyone who has been married less than 12 hours to sit down (obviously the bride & groom). Then you move on to 1 year, 5 years, 10 years etc.. until only one couple remains on the dance floor (the longest married couple).

The bride and groom usually give the couple a special flower bouquet. Sometimes another song is played and the two couples dance together.

I think I agree with the other girls. This tradition dates back to a time when we didn't register for and expect gifts worth hundreds of dollars, and the dollars were all the couple got! I did see it at a Polish wedding, but it was in PA, was casual, and the guests were told to (and most listened) NOT bring gifts . . . . quite a different affair than most LI Weddings.

We are doing the anniversary dance, especially because my parents hit 50 years a month before our wedding and will definitely be winning!!!

That sounds really sweet! I'm going to ask FH if we can do it! None of our friends have done it, so maybe it will be something new to them too.

The anniversary dance is really sweet.... the money dance not so much. I am sorry to say it but it is extremely tacky to ask people to dig more money out of their wallets after they have given a gift, shelled out money for engagement gift and sometimes bridal shower too. I just think its in poor taste. I understand its an old tradition but its outdated now with registries etc.

Sorry!

We had the anniversary dance. Part of the reason we did it was because we weren't throwing the garter or bouquet. The winning couple got my bouquet (for the woman) and a bottle of wine with the garter wrapped around it (for the man). My dj suggested the wine bottle and I loved that idea instead of just handing him the garter.

Re: Dollar Dance??

i didnt do the dollar dance, and havent seen it at weddings but heard of it of course.

Its not part of my tradition so thats why i didnt do it but it is part of some peoples cultural background, so i wont knock their traditions. Seems like there is more meaning to it than just money, such as this part that someone else posted on here

'After all who want to dance with the bride have danced with her, a tight circle is formed around her, and the groom then tries to break through the circle, while the guests try to keep him out. Once he has broken through, he picks up his bride and carries her away from the wedding reception to start their new life together.'

Also i am sure they are doing it just for the tradition of it, not to get more money from their guests...I am sure this is something that older polish guests are used to seeing at a wedding and enjoy since it is part of their culture and something they grew up with. PLUS you cant really say youre just asking guests to shell out more money, i mean it is a dollar and im sure for a polish person the tradition of it means alot more to them than just a dollar. If you are polish and having a wedding and want to throw in traditions from your country then this is a way to do so. Why not keep a tradition strong from the old country

There are so many different cultures and traditions in this world, so many are different than what we are used to, different doesnt always mean bad. In my culture there are no bridal showers, NO such thing as registries, to others they may think a shower is just another way to get gifts and more money for guests to spend, but its american tradition, its not the reason behind it but you can see how others from another background might look at it that way. There are many things we do that other cultures dont understand and find weird. I guess i feel this way bc ive always been stuck in the middle to explain things...growing up and coming from somewhere that many ppl dont know the traditions, i was asked 'well why do you do that' or what is the reason for this' then i have my parents and family and family friends who didnt understand some american traditions and would get asked about it and what was the point of it. I always took it in a negative way when either was asked of me, if someone asked really wanting to know and curious then i answer happily but otherwise when its asked like 'ugh thats weird why do you do that' i always got upset

Aww that sounds like a beautiful tradition! My FMIL is Polish and she mentioned something about a tradition about money and a fiddle. Is there a fiddle involved in the dance somehow. I may be confused LOL.

Re: Dollar Dance??

I have heard of it being done but never seen it. It's just like any other tradition some people have them some do not.. Like me for instance my aunt is insisting on putting a 'scarf' on my head. My Great aunt that is... and she also has a 'hope' chest that is filled with god knows what for me. Literally her and my grandparents started it when I was tiny I have never seen what they have added to it over the years... kinda scared to...LOL

I love this idea! I wish either one of our grandparents would still have thier partners this way one of them would win but unfortunately all of them are now alone, we have all 4 sides of grandparents but they are al alone..

but if a polish person wants to do something to represent their culture then doing the anniversary dance wont do that for them, it has nothing to do with their culture

Yea I think some people dont really read posts thoroughly before responding.

Just to let you all know, dollar dances are about culture and not about getting extra cash from their guests.

Not trying to offend anyone, but this is JMHO.... I've seen it done at all the wedding's i've been to in Pittsburgh with FH... and not only does it sound tacky, it LOOKS TACKY AS HELL! We were at a wedding in June and they did it, and one of FH's friends asked if I was going to do this, and I was like nooo... we don't do that in NY!

They can keep the dollar dance and their cookie tables! My wedding is a NY wedding!
