sorry to offend anyone but i think the dollar dance is tacky...like others said, its like begging for more money and i know its tradition yada yada..but do something sweeter..like the anniversary dance, that's what we will be doing
but if a polish person wants to do something to represent their culture then doing the anniversary dance wont do that for them, it has nothing to do with their culture
Yea I think some people dont really read posts thoroughly before responding.
Just to let you all know, dollar dances are about culture and not about getting extra cash from their guests.
i actually AM polish and im not doing the dance. i know it is a tradition and i still think its a tacky one. like another poster said, its outdated. alot of people dont know it is a tradition and can be thinking that you want an engagement gift, a shower gift, a wedding gift and now this too? like i said before. DONT MEAN TO OFFEND ANYONE, it was simply my opinion. the original post asked what it was, what the point of it was and is anyone doing it....apparently giving my opinion on it and answering the question of im not doing it and why isnt reading the post thoroughly??

Re: Dollar Dance??
I saw it once at a wedding when I was little. I think it is a tradition for some cultures- therefore I dont think it is tacky. I dont know if different cultures have a different reasons for it or not. I bet if you do some googleing you can find all the stories behind it.

i didnt do the dollar dance, and havent seen it at weddings but heard of it of course.
Its not part of my tradition so thats why i didnt do it but it is part of some peoples cultural background, so i wont knock their traditions. Seems like there is more meaning to it than just money, such as this part that someone else posted on here
'After all who want to dance with the bride have danced with her, a tight circle is formed around her, and the groom then tries to break through the circle, while the guests try to keep him out. Once he has broken through, he picks up his bride and carries her away from the wedding reception to start their new life together.'
Also i am sure they are doing it just for the tradition of it, not to get more money from their guests...I am sure this is something that older polish guests are used to seeing at a wedding and enjoy since it is part of their culture and something they grew up with. PLUS you cant really say youre just asking guests to shell out more money, i mean it is a dollar and im sure for a polish person the tradition of it means alot more to them than just a dollar. If you are polish and having a wedding and want to throw in traditions from your country then this is a way to do so. Why not keep a tradition strong from the old country
There are so many different cultures and traditions in this world, so many are different than what we are used to, different doesnt always mean bad. In my culture there are no bridal showers, NO such thing as registries, to others they may think a shower is just another way to get gifts and more money for guests to spend, but its american tradition, its not the reason behind it but you can see how others from another background might look at it that way. There are many things we do that other cultures dont understand and find weird. I guess i feel this way bc ive always been stuck in the middle to explain things...growing up and coming from somewhere that many ppl dont know the traditions, i was asked 'well why do you do that' or what is the reason for this' then i have my parents and family and family friends who didnt understand some american traditions and would get asked about it and what was the point of it. I always took it in a negative way when either was asked of me, if someone asked really wanting to know and curious then i answer happily but otherwise when its asked like 'ugh thats weird why do you do that' i always got upset

WE ARE DOING DOLLAR DANCE!!! AND JACLYN DOESN'T SOUND POLISH, SO I GUESS YOU HAVE TO 100% TO UNDERSTAND!!!
I don't think its about whether someone is 100% or if there name sounds polish enough. She was simple stating her opinion and that's what the original post was asking for to be honest. I don't think anyone was trying to offend anyone but simply giving their opinion. I am italian and have a jewish sounding last name. I wouldn't appreciate someone personally attacking me for this even though it happens, I am Italian and we have a wealth of tradtions many of which I find cheesy and tacky. It's not a personal attack... it was simply an opinion.
Sorry if I offended anyone.

Re: Dollar Dance??
I've seen it done at two different weddings. I could see where some ppl's reactions are like...***??? Because that was my reaction at first. But when you're at weddings you kinda of embrace different things since you're all about the celebration mood. Me and FH surely participated and it was cute.
I don't think I'll do this at my wedding though - but I'll def. would like to do the anniversary dance.

Re: Dollar Dance??
OK. I found an Italian tradition which I definitely think I should partake in....
The groom walks to the bride's house and, together, he walks with the bride and the whole wedding party to church. On the way , town residents would watch the group walk by and present the bride with many challenges. For example, they put a broom on the ground and if she bride noticed it and picked it up to put it away she was considered a good housekeeper. Then, she might come across a crying child, the couple is supposed to quiet him and make him smile, this would mean that they will be good parents. Coming across a beggar, means giving generously and is equaled to having a good heart.
Fun... huh?? LOL!

jaclyn doesnt sound polish?? lol lol lol thats what you based it on...my last name is polish, not that it matters....i answered the question that was originally posted....thats it!! thats the last time i gve my opinion..sheesh
My FH last name is polish what doesn't make Him polish!!! I was raised in Poland and went to many wedding there and every wedding had the dollar dance. I am NOT doing it for money, I am doing it for my family and because that's polish tradition. AND I ANSWERED THE QUESTION THAT WAS ORIGINALLY POSTED!!!! YOU JUST GAVE A RUDE OPINION AND SAID ' i actually AM polish and im not doing the dance' AS YOU ARE BETTER THAN OTHER POLISH PEOPLE WHO ARE DOING 'DOLLAR DANCE'.
a rude opinion? i stated that i am polish because someone else made a comment about it being the tradition so i was stating that i am polish but im choosing not to do the tradition..im not coming down on anyone for doing the tradition. there are plenty of cultural traditions that people are choosing not to do because even though its tradition, its just not for them. i dont care that you were raised in poland...are you coming down on me now because i wasnt raised in poland..i just am polish but raised here so im not good enough to have an opinion on the tradition??? its my opinion, as i stated earlier...everyone is entitled to it...so get off my back

Re: Dollar Dance??
I side with CloudNine, she gave her opinion and thats what this site is about. No one has to agree with her. Its her 'Opinion'. It was kind of rude to come straight out and judge her based on her name. And to draw such a conclusion that you are have to be '100%' to understand, a simple first name shouldnt be a base for what percentage of polish someone is. We are all entitled to our own opinion, agree or diagree.

I have heard of it being done but never seen it. It's just like any other tradition some people have them some do not.. Like me for instance my aunt is insisting on putting a 'scarf' on my head. My Great aunt that is... and she also has a 'hope' chest that is filled with god knows what for me. Literally her and my grandparents started it when I was tiny I have never seen what they have added to it over the years... kinda scared to...LOL
thats really cute!
