So I went to a few weddings way upstate and they do this thing called the dollar dance, where the bride and groom dance with the guests. The Maid of Honor and Best Man hold baskets and collect the money as guests get in line and get about 30 seconds to dance with the bride and/or groom. Some guests throw in $10's and $20's. My friend has a wedding of about 100 and she earned 180$ from the dollar dance alone. I had never seen or heard of this before. Is this just an upstate thing or are any of you on the island doing this/have done this too??
I haven't seen it at any wedding on Long Island or in NYC...but then, I'm sure weddings in other areas haven't seen the craziness that IS a LI/NYC wedding.
It's more of a regional thing. People around here tend to give generous amounts of money for wedding gifts, so that's probably why it hasn't become something common here.

Re: Dollar Dance?
I'm from PA and it's a long-standing tradition in my family. In fact, I've never been to a PA wedding without it. I was always told it's a Polish thing (I'm Polish), but I know other nationalities do it as well. In PA, only the bride does it though... then all the people form a circle around her and the groom has to break through to get to her. It can get kind of crazy! haha

Re: Dollar Dance?
Many Hispanics also still do this at their wedding. I was not really planning on doing it because I didnt want people to feel like 'more money?' and I didnt want anything pinned to my dress or veil. But apparently is tradition, so people almost expected. Also, both of our families are dancers, we all dance, so this would be a great way for us to dance with all our guests, the men make a line to dance with me and the women make a line to dance with FH. So I guess we are doing the dollar dance, def. to a spanish song though.

I do have to figure out where the money is going because I still refuse to have anything pinned to me!

Re: Dollar Dance?
I don't think I would do it unless it was specifically a tradition in my family. I wouldn't want my guests to be turned off by asking for more money after having just dropped a couple hundred dollars on a wedding gift.

Re: Dollar Dance?
This also reminds me of a Polish tradition. And although my mother was born in Poland, I do not think she did this at her wedding. I agree, though, that I would only do it if it was a family/cultural tradition. Otherwise, I'm afraid it might come off as being tacky.

ITA...FH is from Ohio and said that they do this there, but the majority of guests are going to be from around here, I don't want to offend them...

Re: Dollar Dance?
We did it at our wedding because we thought it would be a great way to talk to individuals. Just a warning if you want to do this--EXPLAIN IT TO THE DJs IN DETAIL. Though our DJ was fabulous, he's never heard of the dollar dance and up until right before we did it he pictured something completely different. I am so glad I asked him to explain to me in full what he thought I meant by dollar dance...he was going to have me dance alone and have people throw dollars at me

Yeah, I've been to one where they do the shots! (My Dad thinks this is the best idea ever... I'm not sure how it will look to FH's family, hahaha).
I'm from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area... NE PA. You?
