ive seen and heard of up-state NY doing this.. i think we might.. its cute... and you get money for the HM...

plus my FH is from syracuse and we went to school upstate, so a lot of people have seen it..

without sounding snotty - and im not - but i dont know if it is a 'long island' thing to do.. a lot of my LI friends had NO IDEA what it was..

it's a cultural thing from places like Greece and Persia that have assimilated into American wedding customs.

I've seen it done at plenty of receptions, but I doubt if I do it. But hey you never know

To me it's partly about the money-because I coule really use some extra $ on the honeymoon. (However, I would probably never tell anyone that I could use the extra money)

I think it's just an opertune time to spend one on one time with the guests. I live in Northern Indiana and I've paid a dollar at a number of weddings to dance. One dollar isn't a lot-but the sum that you receive is.

Yeah, the only time I have seen this was when I went to DH's cousin's wedding upstate, I had never seen it before. He told me that usually people will give more than a dollar (like a $20 or whatever) but this is because they don't give as much for gifts as they do on LI.

like myself - i usually throw in $5,10,20 (whatever i have at the time) but its also at the point when im a little intoxicated and sooo happy for the bride and groom - haha

I'm sure we ALL will be intoxicated at this point!

We will probably do this because it is a bit of a tradition with FH's family/friends. He tells me it's a polish tradition but I dont know??? I'm a little skeptical, but he asks for so little it's the least I can do.

what exactly do you do? I always thought with the dollar dance, the money went to the band?

Re: Dollar Dance (w/poll)

the band/dj tells the crowd the dollar dance will take place and its their chance to dance with the bride and groom...

usually the MOH and best man stand there to take the money and give the people their time.. its about a 30 second spin around dance..

my friend that got married in the beginning of july said they had money for the honeymoon.. for all you do for the BIG DAY - i think its a cute reward..
