Domestic Partner Question

Domestic Partner Question

Has anyone (for insurance reasons) became domestic partners before the wedding. We are a year away and would save thousands by getting on my fiance's insurance. Thoughts or suggestions?

I'm assuming that this means you have already check to make sure the insurance recognizes domestic partnership? Not all do, mine doesn't.

Re: Domestic Partner Question

someone was telling me and her husband and her got married a year to the day before their wedding (so that they would both be covered for health insurance). No one knew but their parents.

I don't know if this is something you guys would interested in. . .but it looks like your one year mark is coming up on Friday! (I have no idea how long the paperwork takes, or if that is even an option that you guys want to look into).

We have been thinking about doing it for awhile...but then I just ended up getting insurance through my job. I'd love to have this city insurance though!!

FH works for the MTA and I have been insured as his domestic partner for over a year and a half. I lost my job and didnt have health insurance and his insurance is awesome, so we decided to sign me up. Kinda was a pain, we had to show all kinds of proof of cohabitation like a joint checking account, a lease, joint ownership on a car loan, and recently, we were asked to resubmit our proof again, so they could make sure nothing changed.

Re: Domestic Partner Question

I was insured under DH's insurance for almost 2 years before our wedding....we werent even engaged. With most insurances it hos nothing to do with a state legal document recognizing it.

Each company is different in what is required. For us we had to be living together for 6 mons and shared expenses. All we did was give them a copy of our lease.

Re: Domestic Partner Question

I am under FH's insurance right now. He put me on after I lost my job!!!!! I can't even tell you what a saving grace it has been for us!!!!!!! I am a person with MS so my medication is super expensive. I just got a new medication in the mail today. For one months supply of a new pill it would have been $1086, but I only paid $10. I am so lucky, I would really be screwed!!!!!

Definitely check with his company before you go crazy trying to take care of paperwork. His company recognized DP, but mine didn't.

Re: Domestic Partner Question

My wedding is in October of 2011, but as of right now I am only working per diem with no health insurance. FH's insurance does not cover domestic partnership, so we just went down to town hall and got married. I am covered under his insurance immediately. We are still having a wedding in front of our family and friends next october. We just kept this quiet, only parents siblings and a few close friends know. Its an option, but some people feel weird about doing this...

Yes, we did this, we've been registered domestic partners for almost a year and I have been on FH's insurance. Check the insurance policy, especially the riders in the back of the policy to see if DP's are included. You usually have to provide more than just the legal DP certificate, but it's simple stuff (shared utility bills/lease, etc.)

Re: Domestic Partner Question

If your insurance offers it... I don't see why you wouldn't do it if you needed to. It's not the same thing as having a married status.

My insurance with my company offers a domestic partnership. I just had to list him as my domestic partner with the health insurance company. I did this for dental I think... he didn't have dental at the time. They didn't even ask for proof (though some companies might).

If your insurance doesn't offer the domestic partnership option, then you could go the route of getting married at city hall so that you are now his spouse and thus able to get insurance. I think a lot of people who are getting married do this before their actual wedding date. I actually know of a good handful.

My FH is on my insurance...check with your carrier. We needed to show proof of address, mutual finincial expenses, and a joint bank account.

Every ins is different FH just requires us to fill out the original paperwork with DP. My ins company requires a signed DP form which they provide. We have been DP for about 3yrs now.

You had to live together at least 6 months.... At the time, it didnt make sense for DH & I to do this so we ended up getting married early instead... It didnt take away from the big day at all
