Don't you hate when you go out of your way to do something and you still get dumped on?
I stayed 3.5 hours over time (and didn't take lunch) because a paralegal wanted me to pull 150 SEC exhibits for an attorney (oh, and make a set of copies. Oh. And wanted them right away). So alot of them were printed out of order because 2 people were printing them out (me and a co-worker). I stayed late to put them in order, even after co-worker AND my boss said 'if they need them quickly don't bother putting them in order' but something told me I should.Well the attorney emailed me saying they were not in order and therefore 'hard to understand'.
I hope he is kidding. I emailed him back and told him that was not the case. I know why he thinks they are out of order too (too hard to explain) but they *were* in order when I sent them.
All that for nothing.
I hate working here sometimes.

Jacka$$ ... at least there was no nail clipping going on while you were working OT (hey, you gotta look on the bright side)

That's why I refuse to work OT unless I am desperate for money. I have been walked all over far too many times.

Sorry that happened. That behavior/treatment is one of the reasons I left the legal field...

I can't really refuse.I could have passed it off to the night person helping me but I guess I have a control thing where I feel responsible for finishing the project.
Besides, if I left it for her it *really* would not have been in order!

Yeah right?
He wasnt' the one helping me either. I refuse to accept his help anymore because when I do he ends up pissing me off more than anything else.

Oooh yes, this is sooo true
I also used to kill myself trying to please the attorneys at my office. I had worked tons of OT, but purely to make extra $$. And still, I never felt any of it was appreciated in the end. There comes a point when I just didn't care and walked out at 5:30, no matter what was on my deskI know exaxctly how you must be feeling this morning, Mary
It burns me up when you go out of your way to be helpful and are left feeling as though you did something WRONG!! (???)While there are always some exceptions to the rule and some attorneys go out of their way to let you know they are grateful for going the extra mile for them, it seems that 95% of the time we are left feeling so unappreciated.. even if the work is done RIGHT!
I don't know about you, but its been my experience (after working in law firms for 15 years now) that its often the 'younger' level associates who are more arrogant , unappreciative and critical towards 'staff' than the senior partners are!! Its as if thesy expect you to wipe their own A$$es for them.
What a crappy way to start the morning .. I hope it gets better. Sorry!

ETA: let me clarify that this is in no way a 'bash' towards attorneys. I have worked for really great bosses the past 10 years now, and there are many wonderful people who practice law. Its just that often the climate of big NYC lawfirms is that you are faced with a lot of egotistical types that are so busy climbing the ladder , that should stop and learn a thing or two about saying 'thank you' to the people who help get them there.

Yes, Felicia, I have noticed that as well. While there are exceptions to every rule. In my experience the associates are the ones that take advantage the most.

Re: Don't you hate when you go out of your way to do something and you still get dumped on?
I wish I could just leave at 4:30 like normal. Technically I could have but I know my co-workers. And I'm a bit anal about things. I don't like passing things off that are big projects. Because if things get screwed up I feel that it's my ultimate responsibility. I mean I feel I should take the responsibility. If that makes sense. It jsut made me mad b/c he could have very easily said 'thank you for staying late and pulling all of these' but he didn't know I stayed late in the first place. Plus working OT is the norm here in alot of departments. Comes with the job and I knew that starting here.
I never heard back from him. I think he realized I was right. Ha.
For the most part our atty's are pretty nice , it's just that they are so busy they sometimes forget to say thank you. There are the occasional idiots that pass you in the hallway and never ever ever say hello.
Did I tell you about the one that is germ-o-phobic? Won't touch a door handle with his hands - actually pulls his shirt sleeve down a bit and opens it with the cuff over his hand. No joke. And won't hold the door for anyone - even if you have something in your hand. I've given him a few dirty looks. He knows I think he's a jerk. Yet if he calls on the phone he's pleasant as anything. Very weird.
