Donation vs. favors

Original post by groovypeg

If you are giving a donation, are you still giving a favor?

does a donation count as a favor?

do you think that giving a donation in lieu of a favor is wrong?

interested in opinions...

Jannshari - very well said!! My feelings exactly!!!
I also cannot believe that people would actually complain about not getting favors and 'coming all the way to a wedding and not getting a favor.' Seriously, if you are coming to my wedding for a $4 picture frame - maybe you shouldn't come so I can invite someone who wants to be there for the right reasons!!!

avon breast cancer donation candle

If you are doing a donation to breast cancer, my friend did it through avon by purchasing these candles. She used them as favors, with a card attached that explained where she got them and they were a big hit!

Re: Donation vs. favors

Honestly I am one who really doesn't care about favors - I am giving them just because I found something I wanted to give -so this might sound hypocritical- BUT as a GUEST I would LOVE to get a donation rather than some silly favor that really is only important to the couple but will end up in most of the guests drawers or garbage. The donation will go MUCH farther to help someone else.

So I would have to say I would be in favor of giving the donation. IMO if someone is catty or petty enough to comment that a donation was made instead of giving them a favor then they are probably NOT worth worrying about anyway -

my donation cards say this

As we join together today, we are reminded how fortunate we are in life. We realize there are those who do not share our blessings. In lieu of a traditional favor, a donation has been made in you honor to the March of Dimes and the Alzheimer’s Foundation
Thank you for sharing our day with us.

If people dont appreciate the thoughfullness of trying to help those less fortunate then that can FOff

That's really nice.

The donation card I mean.

Not the F off part. (Although I kind of liked that, too! )

Re: Donation vs. favors

I have been to many wedding that the family made a donation instead of a favor and I think it is very nice. People throw away the favors most of the time or they collect dust! I also don't understand what kind of people would make a comment about something like this because they are not the ones that just spent $60,000 on having the wedding. I don't mean this in a snare way but isn't it true.
People should be appreciative.

I was thinking about doing that and thought aboutt the same thing. You are right though but peopl;e shouldn't say anything. They were there for the bride and groom not to get a favor. TRUE?

I would have never thought about donation in instead. It certainly is a nice alternative route to go. Or maybe get a $1-2 favor and give $1 a person or something to a charity. This way they don't feel like they are leaving empty handed.

i did both

They may be walking away empty-handed with a donation, but they're also walking away with a stomach full of wonderful food and top shelf booze. Sounds like a fair trade-off to me.

LOL! I have to say that I am surprised by what some have to say about this topic! It's all good though! I welcome differing opinions!

Personally, I am giving a donation. Not doing the favors. A donation, IMHO, should be enough.

I just wanted to clarify what I said before. I certainly don't think that way about donations, I think they are a lovely idea, but I actually saw a post like that on the knot. It was a thread about inexpensive favors, and one girl replied, why don't you just do a donation, it can be as little as you want it to be, and nobody would know. That so turned me off. It's the polar opposite of the giving nature a donation should be made in.

I definately agree, you do not go somewhere and expect something. That is greedy!!

That's interesting, because I dislike the idea of spending any of our money on silly little trinkets (NOT saying that all favors are silly little trinkets, so please don't think that) and would probably aim to spend around $1-2 maximum on favors if I was to give them. However, the money we're donating is about 5 times that.

Re: Donation vs. favors

I can't imagine people complaining, EXACTLY after all of the food, drinks and FUN they had. WHO COMES TO A WEDDING for a FAVOR. I think if you are the kind of person that thinks that people get mad than you would get mad yourslef and that is not right.

I never go to a wedding EXPECTING something in return just like when I give someone a gift I don't expect a gift in return. I guess some people are just greedy.

You come to a wedding for the couple because they are special to you not for a little junky favor that will probably be thrown away.

Oh, I agree with you completely. Most favors are dust collectors, and a complete waste, and donations are a great help to the charity that you're donating to. I'm not turned off by the idea of donations of favors, I think it's a great idea, I just hated what that girl said and was hoping this is not a common way of thinking.
A guest who complains about not getting a favor is probably complaining about the meal, the drinks, the dj, and would probably complain about the favor you chose if you decided to give one. Don't sweat it, you can't please everyone.

It is funny how favors could start such a discussion like this.
