My friend just had her baby maybe a week and a half ago. SHe had him a month early so I hadnt gotten anything for him yet. The day she bought the baby home I went shopping for some clothes and bottles for him since she didnt have anything for the baby. Now her 'baby shower' is this saturday and everything on her registry is like $80 and up. Im broke and I have a million things to do for my wedding. Is it wrong to not get her anything else. We've been friends since junior high but you know how you outgrow friends. Well that's the case she's cool and nice to be around in for an hr or two every month or so.
Sorry so long

Re: Dont want to be mean but
If she's your best friend, I would still buy her something, even if it's not off her registry. It is a special moment in her life. It's exciting! But you don't hage to spend a lot to do it! Go the 'personal' direction instead!
Go to a cute little baby store and get a personalized bib or something. They also sell those 'Birthday Prince' or 'Birthday Princess' hats that are my signature gifts when people have kids. They're about $15 in Fortunoff's Baby Store, and you can get it wrapped really nice! You can get that and a few little baby towels or an outfit at Target or somrthing an get away with a cute $30 baby shower gift!
Is she coming to your Bridal Shower or wedding? She's gonna have to spend money to come to those, so you might want to give her a gift now.

Re: Dont want to be mean but
I really think that you should get her something for the baby shower...if you think about it, you weren't required to get her a gift because her baby was early, but you def. should not show up to a shower empty handed...I would go to Target and pick up some clothes for 9-12 months or so, you do not have to spend over $30 as mentioned before.

Re: Dont want to be mean but
sadly, you have to get her something. It isn't polite to go to a party and not bring a gift. You don't have to get her something off her registry (are you sure there isn't anything under $25-$50????) you could get a personalized gift or clothes at Marshalls

Re: Dont want to be mean but
If you're going to the shower, I would get her something, but you definitely don't need to spend $80+ for something off the registry.
Maybe get her something sentimental or nice like a nice receiving blanket (can probably have it monogrammed) or a nice photo album.
You might even look in Things Remembered. You could probably find an affordable gift there and even have it personalized.

Re: Dont want to be mean but
A registry is just a suggestion not manditory. I would say do get her something but it doesnt need to cost a lot. you can get inexpensive baby clothes at a Carters outlet, kmart or walmart. Its what I normally do. Then they get more instead of one pricey item. Besides remember its the thought that counts not the amount spent.

Re: Dont want to be mean but
as a mom... i'm going to give my 2 cents here.
buy her SOMETHING.
you DON'T have to get something from her registry.
carters brand baby clothes is the greatest quality... i love it.
personalizing something small goes a long way for a new mommy.

Re: Dont want to be mean but
You don't necessarily 'need' to buy anything from her registry, especially if you can't afford it at the moment. I'm sure if she's your friend she will understand...but if she's a cheap type of person she may pass that along when she comes to your wedding. But I definitely think you should still buy something.

Re: Dont want to be mean but
get her something....even a $20 photo album beats NOTHING. i'll add my mommy 2 cents by saying that hormones are crazy for her now and if you get nothing, she'll not only NOTICE, she'll be crushed...wrong or right.
note: the best gift of all is diapers...all babies need htem so feel free to get ANY size you want...b/c they don't expire and eventually she'll need them!!!!

Re: Dont want to be mean but
I would find something affordable off the registry
I agree that you can't show up empty handed, but an $80 gift off of her registry is definitely not necessary. Try the kids department at Macy's. They are always having sales, and they have gorgeous stuff for really cheap.

I would try to find something for her that is not on the registry, even if it is only $25.

Re: Dont want to be mean but
IMO - I think that you already got her something and friendship should not be about gifts. I would go to the shower since you already gave her presents. You also said that she told you not to expect a gift from her - and she is coming to your wedding so how is that different?? The friendship should be about sharing the time and special day with the person - not a gift.

Don't show up empty handed because I feel like that would be a slap in the face. Maybe a nice picture frame or something. You don't have to go overboard, but definitely get her something.

Re: Dont want to be mean but
How about a gift card for like $20-$30. Or, Walmart had these baby bath sets for around $20.

Re: Dont want to be mean but
Please don't show up empty handed.
'Cheap' choices:
- Cute little outfits at Target - Gift certificate ($25 or $50).
Make sure you don't buy 'expensive' gift bags or wrapping paper. Go to the dollar store.

Re: Dont want to be mean but
How about making a diaper cake? (like people make towel cakes for wedding showers)
Make it with some diapers, a few bottles and a pacifier. Wrap it up with some ribbon from the dollar stores. You have a cute cheap present for under 20 bucksDiaper cake directions

Re: Dont want to be mean but
Don't show up empty handed. If you're close to Centereach (where I live) or Ridge (where I work) I can give you wonderful baskets to make things with. (I got 3 baskets with shower stuff that I figured I'd make other presents with someday) Don't do the registry stuff. Walmart and Target have great baby things. You can always get a gift receipt too. Gift receipts help both parties out.
