Drama at home! (vent)

Drama at home! (vent)

My dad called me just before to let me know that for Christmas dinner we are having the steaks that he got from as a gift a friend from Omaha Steaks. I was a little let down, because normally we have something like turkey and ham. FH is being particularly stubborn about what he eats on Christmas day and ONLY wants turkey and ham since that's what he always cooked at home. He even offered to cook on Christmas day but my sister said she would because FH and I will be arriving home from NJ (a party) at 2am on Christmas Day. Soooooo.....I called FH informing him of this. I was a bit ticked off about it too. FH said 'no way, we can have steak any day of the week, I'll buy a turkey and cook it'. Now I'm really pissed off because how dare he act this way - it's MY family! So now I'm pissed off at all of them!!
So I call my dad back, now he's mad that he has to 'spend more money' on a turkey (which if it wasn't for the gift of steaks he was going to get one anyway), I said I'd pay for it but noooo now dad is saying he will (then why be mad) and FH is calling me back seeing what the final answer is.

I'm leaving them all and going to Tahiti for Christmas. I've had enough!!!!

Take a moment and remember this is all about a meal.

I can see your FH's point of view. Something he's used to. Being a Texan, steak is pretty much an everyother day affair for me. But maybe you may want to suggest you two having your own xmas dinner of turkey by yourselves?

Your Dad's point of view. I can understand. Maybe he's feelings were hurt, who knows.

Either way.. good luck and hang in there.

Or you could invite me to go with you, I cook both Steak & Turkey!!

We had the same drama for Thanksgiving. My mother was going to order a deli platter for early in the day with me & DH and my sis & her boyfriend. My sis & her bf were going to his mother's for dinner and my mother didn't want them to have turkey twice!!

AH, you have two daughters!! I don't want a SANDWICH for thanksgiving!

We compromised and I got her to make a ham for the first meal. So I totally see where your FH is coming from but, like with my DH, please make it easier for me, not harder.

Here's some more

Can you and FH have your own little holiday dinner say Dec 26th? You can cook and eat whatever you both want ......

I would not ask my parents to make any extra/ diffrent food for FH. Imagine telling your MIL what to make for you at a holiday party ... wouldn't go over well.

If i was invited to someone's house I would eat whatever they prepared. It is not for me to say how they should entertain. If he really wants Turkey, have your own private celebration the day after christmas. Almost every year either for Christmas or Easter, someone makes something I don't care for but I grin and bare it and eat the side dishes.

The only time I have ever added something to the main course, without being asked was when we were having prime rib and my boyfriend was as vegetarian. I made a dish for him seperately because I know he could not eat was was being made and I didn't want my mom going to any extra trouble.

You sound like you might need someone to talk to there. I'll join you if you need me too.

Just buy a turkey breast, not the whole bird. I don't see what the big deal is about a turkey and steak or even a ham. You can get one already prepared at the Honey Baked Ham Company.

That's what I'm ticked off about too. FH has no right to say what should and should not be cooked at MY FATHER'S house.

But I do agree with him...steak? C'mon. Let's eat something that we don't normally have on Christmas.

Times like this I wish my mom was still alive. She'd say 'turkey' and turkey it was. Oh well.

Men!

I say we go for that drink!

Seriously tho.. You can't please them all, all of the time. I agree with you since my Dad and I are really close. It's tough to choose sides and that's what this sorta makes you feel like you're doing.

My father gives in. Says he's only my father and my husband comes first (gotta love my dad). Me I think my dad is the world, no man comes before my father.

Still if this were me, Im sure we'd end up doing our own thing on a different day and Steak with Dad. You've only got so many years left with your father (i always say this even tho my own father is only 52) and each one is special. I don't live in the same state as my father. So if it were me worrying about Steak vs Turkey would so not be a priority for me.

Who knows.. maybe it's AWESOME steak? heh
Still it's just one meal on one day. You'll have plenty more to make into traditions for your own holidays.

Like going to some warm beach for Christmas away from all family and obligations and having a frozen margarita and some tropical chicken dish wondering 'who needs turkey OR steak?'
