dreading registering...help!

dreading registering...help!

I have been putting off registering for a while now and family is saying I really need to get on top of it ASAP. I see all of you write about registering and Im so jealous of those who are all done w/ it. I know I need to do it. But I think the problem is I am indecisive. I feel like I am about to start a whole new life and we're working towards buying a new home and I am clueless!!! Clueless about what I/we want that to look like. I don't know if I should totally change our colors/look of our decor now or just stick to same colors but update. I just don't know where to start or what I definitely need to register for. I feel silly about that but its the truth! I was thinking of registering at BBB and Pottery Barn, went on pottery barn website w/ my sister (matron of honor) coaxing me other nite and didn't even find anything I was crazy about. Not bc they don't have great items, but again going back to me being clueless about what I want. And I know some of you may say, well just figure it out w/ FH...I love the boy to death!!!, but if it were up to him, I think he would try to register for an XBox 360! I think we are both unclear as to what we SHOULD be registering for. He has been married before but he was younger and I think he ended up w/ a mishmosh of stuff after the divorce so I don't think we are really 'set' with what he has and I don't think he knows what we need either. I feel like I just need to take my mom and sisters and bring all them to register w/ us but I know that may be a little weird. If the problem is I don't know what I want myself, how would that help anyway? I know it should be a fun thing...

Im rambling!

Anyone else run into this??? Thx for listening (reading)! Any suggestions pls??? If anyone has a list they worked from, please share.

ETA: didn't see Pencils post about registry items til right now.

when you go, the store usually gives you a paper/book that has categories to help you register for what you need. If you are not sure about colors.. what about appliances and glasses and fine china and towels.. that stuff you don't need color... and remember anything you get can be returned and you'll get store credit for it.. you are better off picking stuff or you wil get stuff you really don't like. And i went with my mom, i didn't bring FH at all and it was fun! Its tiring .. i won't lie.. but fun.. You can also do it online too if that i seasier for you.

i think i may just get FHs input on preferences and end up caving and going w/ sisters and mom! sounds like it would be fun. didnt know if that was weird not to go w/ FH.

Online is def easier but i think you miss out on getting those lists they have. Hopefully the websites will guide me through, reminding me what to register for! Im clueless.

good point. Everything is returnable! Also, white china is universal, so you can pick out whatever you want, and it will match any decor...

ditto for china, and neutral sheetsets (white / beige / grey)

don't be overwhelmed... enjoy it

I was just working on my registry as we speak! I find it a little easier to work off what they have in the store, sometimes its hard to see the detail on the website, and there are a lot of things that you can't even add from the website (or at least I find it to be that way w/ Fortunoff)....so definitely take a day to go with your sister or your mom and just start adding things.

Here's a link to the BB&B checklist, I used it as a guideline, but I definitely didn't add everything they suggested...HTH!!

I have to say, it was tons of fun going around with FH. you're making your first decor decisions together...

I don't have a clue about kitchen things, what plate is better than another...I could keep going on. FH wanted to go with me to help pick out stuff, but I could not do this without my mom and sis! I'm still working on it, but I think it helps having someone there who knows about this stuff.
Good Luck and Have fun with it!

Re: dreading registering...help!

OMG, I feel your pain!!! I felt the exact same way when we first started to register. I actually had a break down in the middle of Macy's because it was all so overwhelming for me. I swear, I hid behind a display of bed sheets and just started to cry! FH and I live in an apt right now but are looking to get into a house by the end of the year, and like you, I have no idea what colors we might be doing, etc. So this is what I did (after my mini break down): First, I registered for things that were neutral or muted colored. I registered for beige towels, mute colored sheet, etc. Second, I registered for the majority of our things at BBB. They have a fantastic return policy - they actually give you cash back if you don't find anything else to exchange it for. Also, most places have an online registry where you can update or change it anytime you want. I think I have added and modified my registry about a hundred times since we started. The only other piece of advice that I can give you is be weary of the checklists that the stores give you. For some people they are very helpful, for me they were very daunting. Just take it one step at a time. I found it easier to concentrate on one room at a time. You can register for the kitchen today and then come back and do the bathroom tomorrow. It doesn't all have to be done in one day. Sorry this is so long, but I hope it helped you a little - from one registry-challenged bride to another!

Re: dreading registering...help!

all your suggestions have definitely helped. thx girls! just talked to FH again and we have a little bit of a better idea of where we want to go with things (at least color of bedroom) and w/ checklists and these suggestions, i feel like at least I have a place to start! Wasnt happy w/ pottery barn for whatever reason. Gonna go sign up for BB& B's registry now and see how it goes.

I hear you.

We just registered last week.
It was easy in BB&B...they have the place divided by rooms...you go room by room and shoot the barcode scanner at things you like.

It took us 2 hours to get through the whole store.

When we got home, I spent another hour comparing my registry to friends', and added another 10 or 15 items that I forgot or the store didn't have.

Re: dreading registering...help!

bed bath and beyond gives you a nice list of things to buy that are in categories. Think about what you would use. and they are great to use any coupons (even if they are expired), which means more stuff.

Re: dreading registering...help!

we decided not to register for any bedding/bathroom things because right now, we're in a fairly small apt in AZ, but plan to move back east when FH graduates in 2 yrs and we hope to buy a house then. we thought it was a waste to try and imagine what we'll have in two years, so we just found pieces we knew we'd want forever. good small appliances, great quality knives and pans, wine cooler, dining room set (a bit obsurd and a stretch, i know). eveen if you don't have a set decor, i'm sure you can work around it! good luck!!!

Re: dreading registering...help!

FH & I registered together and he liked using the scanner (I guess that it is a guy thing). We registered at BBB, Crate & Barrell and Macy's. We went with those stores because we wanted to make sure that friends & family (especially those that live out of town) would be able to purchase something from registry either online or the store without a problem. We went with neutrals for towels, sheets, table linens and our every day dishes. FH even picked out our good china. After we registered we came home and checked out what we registered for online and yes we did delete a couple of things (like the $2,000 cappucino machine) and added a couple of other things.

I ran into this problem, so I stuff to basic..everything stainless and black and white. I can ALWAYS throw in color with black and white so whenever I want to change it up a bit I can.

Good Luck!
