So now that I have found my dress, I have been shopping around for a better price. I have found a great price (20% cheaper) from a dress shop often recommended on here.
Here's the catch...I have to pay upfront in full, cash or check. She also said if I pay in cash there would be no tax. I am alittle leary about this, but love the idea of saving money. Is this a typical dress payment arrangement? Anyone else do this?
TIA

Re: dress payment question...is this normal???
I have heard of it happening before. Especially when the location does not carry the gown at all. The gown I want most places do not have, but they can get it. I'm expecting to pay upfront for it if i decide to order it.

Ok. Yeah, that is my situation. They don't have the gown, but can get it for me.

I paid in cash for my dress, no tax, but I paid half at first and the remaining balance at the first fitting. Just make sure to get a receipt.

Seems like a lot of things in this wedding business is cash with no tax.
I think it is fine as long as you feel comfortable with the store and you get a receipt.

eh....not paying tax is illegal......if these companies get audited, often times they will interview the clietns as well from what i understand. I would suggest to do things the right way so that you can sleep well at night and not stress anything. I don't suggest paying cash to not pay tax. It's very entising because you save money. If anything, I wouldn't advertise it if you decide to do that....you never know who sees these posts

I had to pay for the dress all in one shot as well since I got a great deal on it.

The only problem is that if you pay in cash, you might not have any way to bargain or get your money back if there's a problem down the line. I'd pay the tax and get the assurance. I've heard of so many brides having problems with their gowns being late, or not right, and the best thing you can do is call your credit card company.

Well...you don't know that they're not paying the tax, they might be paying it for you so they can save the credit card fees. Yeah, right, I don't believe it either, but it's possible.

the tax can be included in the price of the dress. do you pay tax when you buy a hot dog from a food vendor?? NO. buttt they pay tax and so they include it in the price of the food.

No it is not a normal thing to request full payment if the dress is being ordered. If it is a sample then maybe but most places still let you make payments. I think normal is about 3/4 of the full price for deposit.

Re: dress payment question...is this normal???
it is not the norm, but like it has been said I am sure it happens here and there. The norm is about 50% down or even 60% which is what i did.
Here is my problem with this, depending on where I am buying it from, if i don't know much about this place then I would NOT do it...There are ALOT of ppl who set up stores, wedding services, take money from ppl then disappear. This has been happening ALOT more often now than you think...I recently read an article about this. One place was a wedding gown store, that stayed open about a year if that, took a bunch of orders, probably told brides 10months to a year and then of course they just closed down...What are the chances of this? not sure how likely it is but bc of that I wouldnt take a chance, although they would do fine with deposits alone lol
but like someone else said, if there is a problem down the line, they might act differently if they already have all the money

I would imagine that it is normal to pay it all upfront. I have also heard of some places doing payments. As far as the tax stuff- It doesn't surprise me even though it sounds a lil shady- Im sure its fine though.

I know Phyllis' policy is that if you're ordering a discounted gown (which it almost is from her), you pay in full up front.
I paid by credit card so that I would have something to fall back on if something went wrong, and I'm glad I did. It was worth the $. Don't forget, tax is only 4.625% on clothing.... a wedding gown is clothing!

tax on clothing under 110 is 4.625% otherwise it is still 8.625% on clothing over $110.
