are there any stores that have sample sizes to try on in bigger sizes (like 14 or 16)?

Most of them do. I am in the plus sizes myself and every shop I went to there were a ton of dresses for me to try on. You shouldn't have a problem anywhere you go. But if it helps, the 2 I found the biggest selections in were Bridal Suites of Centereach and Fantasia Bridal. I actually ended up using Fantasia Bridal as my shop. They are AMAZING.

thanks for the tip...im going to saks in nyc and bridal reflections massapequa...im just afraid everything is gonna be like a size 8/10 which is really like a 6/8 and ill be looking at dresses that don't even sorta fit right and be trying to get an idea of what the real thing is gonna look like

bridal reflections in massapequa definitely does!so don't worry :) i got my dress there and was very happy with the experience

RK Bridal, Keinfelds, Each had a about 7 for me to try on in the style I liked. I am sure they have more. Depends on what you want. I also found a few (not as many) at Macy's herald square.... I ended up getting my dress from Macy's Herald square.
