Dress Shopping - HELP!

Dress Shopping - HELP!

I'm fairly new to New York and I have no idea where to start looking for dresses. I really don't want to spend more than $2000 (and I would rather spend less). I don't want to waste my time or a consultant's time heading to a place that is way out of my budget. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks so much!

i don't know much about this but i will give you an idea considering most people are probably sleeping at this time. I have heard if you like a dress at a particular shop you can go to Burton's (in the huntington area?) and they will order the same exact dress for you but at a discounted price.
My best friend got married last year and she said she went there and saved $600 on her dress.

Yeah...I'm a night owl and this is the only time I can find enough time to surf around. Thanks for your suggestion. Perhaps if I end up finding a pricier dress that I just love and can't do without...I'll check out Burtons. I just think how much easier things would be if I was getting married in my hometown...oh well...it will be an adventure!

Lillette's...I just wrote that down after reading several reviews...this is a fantastic site and I am glad that I came across it. Thanks for yet another vote.

I actually moved here four years ago...but it seems like only yesterday as far as my knowledge of the area.

Oh...about Lillette's...neither myself, my MOH or my FI have a car so finding a place close to public transportation is a must. I'll have to check out exactly where it is.

I have heard good things about RK Bridal in Manhattan. I am going there next week to look at BM dresses. I hear they have a large selection of wedding dresses.

definitely check out some designers online before you head out... maggie sottero seems to be a pretty resonable (price wise) wedding dress designer....

Re: Dress Shopping - HELP!

Thanks hmpena...RK Bridal is actually the one place that I already had. It is just so convenient and has a large selection. If you are looking for your BM dresses there, where did you find your wedding dress?

cjb88...since I first wrote this message I have been looking on-line and have found some dresses I like in my price range...Maggie Sottero actually had two of them...thanks again all...

Kleinfeld!!!! They are moving (or have moved) from Brooklyn to Manhattan. They have a HUGE selection.

Saks bridal department is great (lots of Amsale & Reem Acra but those gowns are pricey). Also, lots of brides use Macy's bridal dept.

I tried Bridal Reflection (Carle Place), RK, Saks & Kleinfeld but ordered from www.gownfind.com - Phyllis is located in Long Island and her prices are amazing.

You should also check out and register at something like the wedding channel or theknot - they will send you emails about trunk shows in the area.

I heard that Kleinfeld dresses start at 1500 so I wouldn't waste my time... JMO

I also heard that Burtons is great. I got mine at a Bridal Suite located on 110 in Huntington and spent much less than $2000.

Good luck!

My suggestion is just go into a store, tell them how much you want to spend and have them direct you to which dresses would be in the appropriate price range. I compare it to car shopping. Don't show me the beamer when all I can afford is the Hyudai

YES MAGGIE SOTTERO IS VERY REASONABLE , AND BEAUTIFUL IN MY OPINION! MY DRRESS IS MAGGIE!

Re: Dress Shopping - HELP!

I found my dress at Lilette's and then called Burton's... they came in under $350 less for my Maggie Sottero Grace dress. Add to that that alterations at Burton's were much more reasonable than Lillette's. A lot of Maggie's dresses have corsets so you need no alterations there, Burton's doesn't charge for alterations on the torso anyway. My alterations for hem $65 and bustle $65

I also had to buy a crinoline and they were offering the same exact price as the lowest price I could find on-line for it... $65.

So all in all I guess I saved at least over $500 on the same dress.

Shop around, get the lowest price and see who will match or beat it.

Make sure you ask about alterations and their price. Most girls don't and sometimes that can be as much as the price of the dress.

Thanks so much for all of your help and suggestions. Now I am much more excited about searching for my dress. It is great that so many of you had the same thoughts...makes things easier. prncssrachel I like your philosophy. Thanks again everyone

Where did you ultimately find your dress? I am still shopping.

Re: Dress Shopping - HELP!

Ok so that you don't waste time don't bother with Bridal Reflections, Kleinfelds or Bridal Salon of Manhasset. Definitely be honest about your preferred range when you go into places. RK Bridal is very affordable, Flowerama had very affordable gowns too. $2,000 is plenty to work with to get a beautiful gown. Have fun shopping!

Just FYI, RK in Manhattan has tons of dresses to choose from and great service, but they'll only let you try on 10 or so before kicking you out.

No one told me this before I went and I was really mad when I was asked to leave!!

The Wedding Salon in Manhasset is awesome, and they have gowns for less than $2000. I went there on a Thursday night at 6 PM and I was there til 9 PM. The same woman helped me the entire time and didn't rush me at all. When you go, just tell them your price range. They don't push you to spend more money.
