Dress Shopping Solo

I'm going through pictures of wedding dresses and I'm not finding anything that I'm with. I also didn't realize how much goes into buying a wedding dress. I don't know if I love tulle, taffeta, A-line, mermaid, etc. I don't want to make those types of decisions on 'the day' I go dress shopping because I know I'll get too overwhelmed. What do you think of dress shopping alone or with my mom or MOH? Is that weird? I feel like if I try on dresses I'll have a sense of what I like so I don't feel overwhelmed. Right now my only criteria for a dress is that it's strapless, has a train, and makes my boobs look big.

UPDATE: So I took a break from working at home and went to try on a few dresses by myself. I'm glad I did because I was able to have that time to figure out what I liked and didn't like. It was nice having that time alone because I was alone with my thoughts and I definitely have a better direction of what I want and what I'm looking for.

I'm not going back to the drawing board per say, but I'm going to renew my search online now that I know what I know. But, I will not buy a dress unless I have my mom and MOH - that I know for sure.

Thanks, ladies!

Most people don't know what they like until they start to try dresses on. You may up going a completely different direction that what you envision. Bring some pictures of dresses that you think you like and let your consultant help you. Once you start to try on you see what works and what doesn't. I think going with one or two people whose opinions you trust is a good idea. Too many people starts to get overwhelming. Remember it's your decision, bring the people you'd like to share the experience with and thats it.

I went by myself a few times...sometimes it's easier just to get an idea of what looks good on you and what you like before you involve other people and their opinions.

I don't think its weird for you to go alone or with just your mom for the first few times. I know I would NEVER be able to make a decision on my first day of trying on dresses. I live in Virginia but I knew I wanted to get my dress in NY on a trip up I had planned to visit my parents. Since I knew so much was riding on that trip I spent a few days down in VA going to different shops here by myself and deciding what I liked and trying on all different styles. I went into my NY appointments already knowing where my focus was going to be and ended up having an amazing dress buying experience with my family. All the consultants were super supportive to me shopping by myself, even though they knew I was not going to be making a decision that day. I definitely recommend it, I think it helps you make up your mind on what you truly want without having all the other opinions to consider.

It's definately overwhelming and nice to have a trusted opinion.
It's also a fun experience and nice to have people to share it with.

Also, you need someone to sneak photos in case you find something you love

Dress Shopping Solo

I went dress shopping with my mom only. No one else is seeing me in my dress until my wedding day. I am so glad I went with just her because I knew I could trust her opinion, and if anyone else was there to give me an opinion, it would've driven me nuts.

When I went shopping, I took my mother and FSIL. I had invited my FMIL, but she is sick often and couldn't make it. The two dresses that I went to look at were TOTALLY different than what I ended up with (went to try on Maggie Sottero Dynasty and Alandra and ended up with Lorie). So when you go, but sure to keep an open mind. I thought I wanted one thing, but ended up with something that I had always said (before I got engaged) I wanted. I would definitely bring at least your mom, you will want someone else's opinion - ESPECIALLY if you find a dress that you love.

I just took my mom with me when going dress shopping. I didn't want to involve anyone else and take that moment away from my mom as I'm her only daughter. I'm taking my FSILs (which are my MOHs) to see the dress when I go back and try on accessories with it and also pick out their dresses. Its the same store. I too went with Dynasty, Alandra and Divina in mind and ended up with Juliette. The consultant made me try on all of the different styles just to make sure I didn't like them.

I went through the same thing when I started thinking about bridal gowns...

Bottom line...try on a ton because it looks very different on the rack vs. on you.

plus...you are never gonna have this experience again...have fun! You will know when you try on THE dress!

I recommend going alone. I enjoyed it and when I found the one I called everyone to come...... I do not recommend looking online. I found you may fall in love and then never find it....just go to the store and see what is there.

Re: Dress Shopping Solo

I went the first time w my mom and it was great. Too bad I went to princess bridal and had a shlt time... But the second and third I was alone bc I wasn't sure what I wanted and didn't want my girls just sitting around. It was kind of nice to be done alone bc it is very overwhelming and sometimes your afraid to say no to a dress bc you don't want to hurt feelings.

I too have gone alone. I feel like the sales people also pressure you less because you can say 'well I can't make a decision til mummy is here!' :) but it really gives you time to decide what you love ON YOU! :) gl!

OMG I've used that line plenty, and it definitely works! It really helps take the pressure off of deciding at that moment knowing you can pull the mommy card :)

I initially only went with my sister MOH. Once we narrowed it down to 3 dresses I took the large group. Mostly his family cause I only have my sister here in NY.
I'm lucky they treat me like family already :)

Dress Shopping Solo

I went shopping by myself (5 stores)... I didn't know what would look best for me. I think I know what I want so when I'm ready to be tortured, I plan on bringing my mom and bridesmaids to make the final decision... It was kind of odd in the solon because every bride had their mom. It was even strange when I was trying dresses on and my mom would call to see what I was up to. I took a pic ad sent it to my MOH (my sister). My mom and my sister were pissed but I didn't pay so they are ok.
