Dress Shopping with FMIL

Dress Shopping with FMIL

Well, some of you know I was not happy about the whole 'strapless dress' thing. Yesterday I watched her try on about 8 strapless dresses, some were ballgowns that were just as nice if not nicer than my wedding gown! I was so upset. She was even trying on white and ivory! I told her she had to wear a color! So, she served me right. She selected a strapless dress with ornate beading up top. Then the bottom of the dress is chiffon, with the beading trailing through. It is a dress you would wear to the oscars! It costs about the same as my dress too! Now I am so upset, because she really will look better than me. I am not a size 4 like her either! My dress will look so plain now, and I AM THE BRIDE!!!!!

Exactly!! YOU ARE THE BRIDE!!!! No one notices anyone else at a wedding other than the bride! The most simpleist (sp? - not real word) gown can look so amazing on a Bride! Please try not to be upset!!! You will look GORGEOUS!!!

And you will be the star of the show. You are the bride. Your wedding gown and beautiful glow will have all the attention. I know it!!!!!!!!

Like I said in my previous posts I had MIL and SIL issues and them wanting to be the star of the show (or so it felt...well SIL actually said it was her brother's wedding and so she needed to stand out!! Thank goodness she was in the bridal party or I swear she would have worn white/ivory.) but no matter what they did not upstage me. I am sure your situation will be the same.

You are the bride and all eyes will be focused on you, have no doubt! If she tries to 'upstage' you, she will look like a fool.

(I'll let my horns slip out here a bit... you could always instruct the photographer to NOT take pictures of her....)

Christy, you will not be overshadowed by your FMIL. Yes, her gown is ornate and costly but no one really cares about what she is wearing. You are going to be the center of attention. Stop putting yourself down You will be a beautiful bride...trust me on this one, I'm sure all the other brides will agree all eyes will be on you!!!

I cant believe her!!! Im sorry. Im with you. What a B*TCH!!!! Hee hee hee maybe spill a glass of red wine on her dress RIGHT BEFORE THE CEREMONY. So she will have to change into some frumpy old rag. Just an idea.
But no one will be as beautiful as you on your day. Dont worry God will punish her in some way

This is sooooo irritating. I understand exactly how you are feeling. Your FMIL is obviously an attention grabbing pain in the !@#. But, you will be the one in white, and all eyes will be on you that's for sure. No one gives a crap about the MOG.

When my sister was married, her FMIL bought a black and white ballgown, a gown fit for a coronation, not a wedding....and just totally looked ridiculous. No one paid an ounce of attention, and the photographer made sure to take pics of her from the waist up only. It was hilarious. When the proofs came back, she was furious that there were no pics of the skirt of her dress.

Tell the photographer to position her behind everyone, and zoom in.

Misty makes a very good point, Christy. When women that age wear things that are too ornate or not age-appropriate (and it sure sounds like the dress she chose is inappropriate), people will talk about her behind her back and will remember that she looked ridiculous. YOU, however, will stand out as the beacon of beauty dressed totally appropriately - because you are the BRIDE and it is YOUR day!

A couple of years ago we went to a wedding where the mother of the bride wore a little white dress-- Everybody noticed her and said ' Who the heck wears a white dress to their daughters wedding.'
It did not take anything away from the bride who looked beautiful, it just made the mom look stupid for picking a dress like that.

Edited because I am not sure if the bride has friends on this board.

I agree w/everyone Christy. Dont worry about her, b/c noone else will pay attention her anyway. All eyes will definitely be on you, and you will be the star. SO what she's a size 4, I'm sure she will look ridiculous trying to compete w/you. Nothing worse than a mother trying to act young. It's a shame.

But your wedding will be YOUR day, and she or anyone else CANNOT take that away from you. Hugs to you

Re: Dress Shopping with FMIL

what color is the dress? Not ivory or white, right? Maybe your parents should say something.... One of your family members should say something like,
'I want my dress to match yours- in color and cut'... What are you wearing? Or have your mother get the exact same dress as her or something! J/K on the last one but I want to get that ***** back!

Christy,
I will not let her ruin your special day!! She is only one person. If she wants a dress similar to yours, let her be. Maybe she lacked something on her wedding day that she has to make up for 30 yrs later!! I have been to weddings where people wore white and looked off key and in some cases tacky.

Christy,

Don't let her ruin your day. You are a beautiful woman and will look stunning in your bridal gown. Once people see you walking down that aisle looking gorgeous and with the glow of love on your face no one will even remember what your FMIL was wearing.

What an immature loser!! Don't let her ruin your day and steer clear of her after the wedding too - she sounds like a piece of work!! You will be the center of attention because you are the bride and you will be glowing and gorgeous!!

CHRISTY

Don't worry everyone will be looking at you not her! I have to agree with the ladies here that more than likely people will look at her and think WTF? She is obiously very immature! Fu*k her!!!! You will be a beautiful bride no matter what!!!!! Maybe you can talk some one into tripping her up the aisle

Don't worry, really. I've been to soooo many weddings and even if there are people there wearing 'Oscar nomination' gowns, they all pale in comparison to the bride. Plus, understated can be very, very elegant and in some cases make the more ornate person look out of place. Just ignore her and enjoy your day b/c in the end, there's really no way she can steal your thunder - you're the bride!!!

Re: Dress Shopping with FMIL

No matter what your FMIL wears you will be the center of attention. It will always be YOUR day as much as she would like to make it hers. I am sure it must be very hard, but try not to let her get to you. Just think of how ridiculous she will look and how she will make a fool of herself for trying to show up the bride. Everyone will see right through her.
