Dress Size scam?

Original post by mirabella

Anyone else find that bridal places usually try to put you in a dress size 2 sizes to big?? I am very straight and usually a size 4 in dresses and they proposed for me to try on size 8 and 10 bridal gowns? I am tall thin, no hips, 34B.. nothing exciting where they would need to pull in anything.... Is this just a way for them to make a fortune on alterations??

Even when I was a bridesmaid I remember Adriennes in Islip doing this and arguing that they ordered the wrong size for me when they took my measurements - then hit me up for alterations $$

Hhmm...that's odd...I'm a size 4 too in regular clothes, but my measurements matched up close to size 4 in my wedding dress aswell. Since my dress has a corset back and it would be easier to adjust if need be, the lady insisted I order a size 4.

I think it depends on the designer though too...I think you should look at what measurements match each numerical size and go from there.

Same here. I wear a street size 4 normally and my dress was only a 6 when i ordered but witht he weight I lost they had to take it into the size 4 again. Depends on the designer and style of the dress I think. I know some girls go up as much as 4 sizes.

where did you get your dress? i know davids bridal does regular street clothes sizes, but most are very different, youll see most girls on here say this

I ordered my dress from a local bridal shop (in CT) and it's a Maggie Sottero. We referred to Maggie Sottero's sizing chart and my measurements were close to size 4 (maybe half-one inch difference), but the lady at the store said that since my dress has a corset back, it would be easy to either tie it tighter or looser according to fit. I guess I'll have to wait and see

My shop went over the sizing chart with me before telling me the dress size. This way I understood what was going on and there should be no problems.

I forgot to mention...she did also say that if my dress had a zipper in the back, or if it was a 'mermaid' style, we would have gone with the 6 to be on the safe side...so I guess the design of the dress plays a role as well...

Adriennes... they made me see red!!! At the time when I was a bridesmaid ... my other best friends were in it as well... one of them same size as me... they order my dress 2 sizes bigger... I said this is wrong and unacceptable... I tried on my friends dress 2 sizes smaller in front of them and it fit perfect ... It would not have required any alterations

However.... With their cash only policy...they dont care because once they know they have you - your screwed... I didnt realize I was signing a contract comitting I agree with their measurments... so when the dress came and was obvious way to big... (wrong size!) they said well you signed the contract.... meaning tough luck and lets discuss alteration money... yuck!
Bottom line I bought a Vera Wang bridesmaid dress from them... couldnt believe I dropped a couple of hundred dollars there.... and the staff treated me like garbage.
I dont know how they stay in business...

Just be on your toes ladies if anyone has to go there!!! OR TAKE MY ADVICE DO NOT GO TO ADRIENNES IN ISLIP!!!!!! I

MOST Designers the sizes are bigger...I am a 0 and my dress was a 2 and it was too small.

My BMs all went up 2 full dress sizes and they fit them almost perfectly

This is really b/c your (wedding dresses especially) are usually European sizing. In the US it's a larger no. b/c we are all about the 'number' in our size. So like for instance I would be a 0 in the US but there's no way I'd be a 0 in Europe I'd be like a 4...
Anyways just to check those of you whose dress is a size 4 what size are you in 'regular clothes' lol i dont' know what to call it?

Wedding dress sizes are way off from the sizes we're used to, but if you think you're being scammed check the designers size charts and match up your measurements. I'd rather have a dress ordered slightly larger than have it be to small.

Ha- I wear a size 10 or 12 and I am relatively flat, for my best friend's wedding, Bridal Reflections in Carle Place, insisted I order a size 20 It came in, I stepped into without unzipping it and inches have to be chopped away. I already have to pay for extra length being 5'9 but I also had to pay for extra size. So annoying! But the good thing is that there is an alteration cap! The sizes on formal wear are crazy!!
