Dress Sizes

I'm going to order my Bridesmaid dresses this week. Most of my girls are out of state, so I have a size chart for the designer (After Six) and I just don't think its right. After Six is made by Dessy and I just got a dress for my friend's wedding that matched my measurements and it is ridiculously HUGE!! I mean 3 sizes too big - everywhere! So, now I'm trying to help my BM to get the closest fit possible. Does anyone have any experience with After Six? Should I have them go down one or two sizes from their measurements? Thanks a ton for your input!

Re: Dress Sizes

Did you speak to the bridal salon? If you order them purposely the 'wrong' size and they don't fit at all, you are responsible not the bridal shop. Just a word of caution.

Re: Dress Sizes

Definitely let the store do the measuring and decide what size to order. The store I ordered from ordered one dress according to measurements and it turned out to be too small on one of my girls - they therefore had to do a lot of work and did not charge for alterations. If you order the wrong size, you will be responsible for any problems.

Re: Dress Sizes

I always found bridesmaids dresses run very small, so you will have to order up a size or two, better to be big then small. Where are you ordering your dresses from? One store, Several stores or online?

Good luck

Re: Dress Sizes

I'm getting them from a wholesaler, but I went to bridal salons to have the girls try them on. They definitely run big, because the size I ordered for my friend's wedding is HUGE on me and its what my measurements were on the size chart. I don't know what to do. I feel bad having my girls get their 'correct' sizes according to the salon, b/c I know it will be HUGE!

Re: Dress Sizes

Speaking from experience, ou should really go according to the size chart. Sometime the dress is big in one place (example - hips) because the girl needs the bigger size for the bust. My sister was a 2 in waist and hips according to the chart, but an 8 for the bust - so they needed to order the 8. It was huge on the bottom, but it could be fixed. Too tight is difficult to fix.

Re: Dress Sizes

I had dessy dresses and out of 6 girls they all turned out great with 2 exceptions...

1 BM has a large top...so therefore the bottom was huge on her...but that is her body type.

1 jr BM is a size 0, but the smallest they had was 4...so they had to do some major altering...

Re: Dress Sizes

yabbobay - that is good to hear! My friend has 8 BM and so far 5 of us have tried them on and they are too big on 3 of us in every area, not just the smaller parts of us so I got worried. But, if yours were good that makes me want to stick to the chart and if they have to get alterations - well I guess thats part of being a BM - it happens to us all!

Re: Dress Sizes

I had my girls try on the sample and ordered based on how well the sample fit. I think that's the best way to do it.

It was Jim Hjelm.

The sample was a 10, so if it fit perfectly I ordered a 10, too tight a 12, too loose an 8, WAY too tight a 14.

My sister was measured by the salon for the same dress, ordered according to the chart and the dress was a size small. MY MOH by her measurements was an 8 on the charts, but went to the shop and the 10 fit perfectly, so she ordered a 10.

Just have your girls go to a local shop and try on the dress.

Re: Dress Sizes

I think susan has a good point as well...my girls also tried on the sample...the one girl with the big top couldn't get the top of a 10 zipped up...and we were debating whether or not to get her a 12 or a 14...maybe we went a little big just to be sure...

2 girls could not come to try on the sample...but ironically they both only needed minimal alterations...

did you look at the chart yourself when ordering them with your friend? I have heard that some shops try to get you the bigger size...so that there are more alterations...but I looked at the chart for each girl...

Re: Dress Sizes

Thanks everyone for your advice! I have the chart myself. My fsil's measurements are a 10, but she was swimming in the sample which was a 10 - so I think she should get an 8. Thanks again!

Re: Dress Sizes

we have had times where we tryed on sample and thought oh we would only need one size up, but the salon order 2 sizes up and thank god for it, my one friend just barely fit the top if she got the smaller size she would have been in trouble.

I rather order larger sizes
The samples always seem to be bigger then the actual dresses (we found this with the ones we tryed on) maybe cause so many girls of differnts sizes are trying them on and end up getting stregthed out.

good luck
