What's the deal with this? Does it make the antibiotic ineffective or what? I have a sinus infection and need my wine!

If you're going to drink there's no point to take the antibiotic because alcohol can make many antis less effective!!

Just so you all don't think I'm an alcoholic that absolutely needs a drink -- DH and I are going out for his sister's birthday this weekend, so I just wanted to know if I could drink. IT's so rare we can all go out and we'll be at a bar ....

IO had a similar situation... a galss or two of wine shouldnt do anything. You could always double your dose the next day. Good Luck...

I have done it before without problems.
However, if you are taking Flagyl (not usually prescribed for sinus or respitory infections), you WILL get sick if you drink.

I wouldn't worry about it. It just makes it a bit less effective that day but doesn't reverse the effects. I am in the same boat as you, I am on antibiotics but couldn't resist having some wine with dinner last night. It got my docs ok!

gets me drunk REALLY FAST!!! Last time I was on antibiotics (Z-pak, I think) a bunch of us went to go see our friend's band at the Downtown, and two beers in I was lightheaded!! I can normally have 5-6 before I really start feeling it, but I forgot about the antibiotics (it was my last day on it) and before I realized it, I was bombed! I don't know if it makes the medicine less effective or not, but I was so drunk at that point that I didn't feel anything
One of our friends got pretty sick the night of DH's bachelor party too - he was on antibiotics, but he was drinking pretty heavily. I wouldn't recommend that, but if you're only having a glass of wine I think you'll be fine. Isn't that supposed to be good for the heart anyway?

i would consult the prescibing docter and/or a phamacisit... they gave you medication for a reason, would hate to see somthing worse happen. There are ceartain medications when your not allowed to ever drink ever...

I may be off here, but I think that red wine does not thin the blood, so it would be logical to think that it will not affect the absorbancy of the anti-biotic. Maybe??? Sounds good though, right?

The theory is good, but it has to do more with the liver.

That does sound good. But if I remember correctly, alcohol can actually increase the absorbancy of the antibiotic, so that you become more susceptible to any nasty side effects like nausea, headaches, etc.

Either skip it or just limit it to light drinking - it won't hurt you - it will just make the antibiotic less effective. I wouldn't go getting smashed though!

Amen to that! I have seen people PUKE thier guts up to no end when they take Flagyl and drink!

I think antibiotics can intensify the effect of alcohol, but I am not sure. My suggestion is to call a pharmacist (not a doctor) and ask them if a glass of wine would hurt. It's a reasonable question.
