My FH wants to rent a car and drive from Rome to the amalfi coast. Im a little skeptical. I heard its very confusing to drive around in rome. Any thoughts? Also, anyone know how many hours it is from rome to amalfi?
Thanks!

Re: driving in rome
well all I know is that they drive CRAZY in Italy...and I can imagine that driving in a city like Rome would be even crazier. A car would probably be more convenient than taking a train because you don't have any schedules to follow and can stop whenever you want, but it probbaly won't be too relaxing for the driver, and they'd miss out on seeing whatever your driving past.

i wouldn't recommend it - it is TOTALLY crazy and a completely different driving style. . . .
tailgating is a way of life - everyone literally just climbs on top of eachother - there is so much dangerous passing into oncoming traffic. . .
i can't even explain it but there is almost no concept of personal space when it comes to driving - as long as the person isn't touching you it is okay for them to be centimeters away from you.

do not drive in Italy and mainly in Rome... roads are small and people there are all over the streets and they drive like maniacs.
find a tour or train it there

Re: driving in rome
That's not a smart idea because they have alternate driving days for cars anyway, so you won't be able to drive it everyday into the city. Also, I think you may need a pass to enter the heart of the city and I'm not sure if the rental company provides that.
Also, if you decide to rent a car in Rome, when they find out that you will be driving to Naples and the Amalfi, they may not rent the car to you because that area is a high-theft area.
You're better off walking, talking the bus, or the train to the Amalfi coast. Once you're in one of the towns on the coast, you can take a ferry to the other towns. They run often depending in the towns you want to visit.
Any questions, FM me

Italy is the worst place in the world to drive. Take public transportation, see if there is a train that runs, their trains are awesome.

I agree!!! I thought my FH drove bad unitll I went to italy. I was so nervous driving with people over there. And there are no stop signs and barley any lights. its go when ever you have the chance to go. and you can park where ever. It's nothing like here.

yeah its kind of like the 'honor system' at intersections - my uncles would beep the horn and flash their lights and that meant they werent stopping!
and parking? some streets are very narrow but people park there anyway. . . so you have to beep until they come out and move the car!
obviously - that isnt in Rome but i am talking about the more rural areas

Re: driving in rome
We are going there on our honeymoon and we are NOT driving anywhere. We are taking trains from city to city. People receommened to us that it's less stress and you see more.
