Hi everyone, I am new to the board, just got engaged on v-day... have some questions... I've known many people that throws engagement parties, is it neccessary? Is there a time limit after the actual engagement to throw the party or I can do it whenever I want to?

Second- your question We got engaged on Dec 10 2004 and jut had out e-party on April 9. I don't think there is any time frame, and I also dont think a party is necessary. We had one because my mom wanted to give it to us. The only thing I would say about timing is that it shouldn't be too close to the wedding (less than 8 months or so)

Welcome to the board and so true as Lauren said, u will become addicted.
I got engaged back in september and we are on again off again with the idea of an e-party. if we do have one, it will be like a bbq in our new backyard (when we move in) in june sometime. we wouldn't have anything big, just close family and a few friends.
but its not necessary, its up to you and your FI, if u want one, unless your parents want to through u one, then go for it.

we are only having one because my parents are throwing it- otherwise we wouldn't.

it's no joke when people say you'll get addicted to this site.
in my family/culture, we have a small engagement party with immediate family members. the bride and groom exchange watches and the bride's family usually gets gifts for the fh's siblings.
i think an e party is nice but not necessary. do as you (or your parents) please.

I think the BBQ idea is awesome, if we do have a e-party, I wouldn't want anything big, we are paying for our own wedding and would like the day to be perfect, so most of our $$ are going there

No you don't have to have an E-party they say that you should have one with in 3 mts. I think -
We put our off a bit (5 mts.) cause there was a death in both of our families -
I wasn't going to have one at first but then when we pushed the wedding back we figured why not -
and don't ever be sorry about asking question that's one of the reasons we are all here

We got engaged on 12/23/04 and had an e-party 2/4/05.....My FMIL threw the party for us, otherwise we wouldn't have had one....

Congrats and welcome!!! I got engaged on 12/4/04 and our engagement party is on 7/10/ 05, but its nothing big. Its just a BBQ at my FH house. If you dont want one you dont have to have one. Only if you want to.

They are not necessary, we are having one because we know not everyone will make it to our wedding. This way they can share our good news another time. Wedding is in NY and eparty is in Boston.
I got engaged 9/3/04 and our eparty is 6/18/05. We did it when it was convenient for us!

Yay! Congrats on your engagement and welcome to the 06 board!!! You should never feel silly about the questions you ask, cause believe it or not somebody is prob thinking the same thing. We didn't have an E-party cause we're putting the money towards the wedding. Lol, we got engaged on Thanksgiving and then had a Superbowl party. I like to think of that as our E-party since it was the 1st time we hosted something in our apartment. I dunno if there's a time limit but it seems like there isn't, so do with what you feel most comfortable with.

You dont have to have a party....its totally up to you....my parents threw us one...so it didnt cost us anything
PS we got engaged Aug 2nd...and our e party was on Oct 2nd

Both sets of parents threw ours. We got engaged on Christmas Eve and had our E-party on March 6.
That was enough time to get everything settled and planned and still send out invites with enough time.
