Here is the dilema. I got engaged in december. My mother offered her home to have an engagement party. But she is limiting us to 40 people. Now 40 people is my wedding party, siblings, and parents of both sides. FH mother is insisting on inviting all of her 8 sister. Now that is not fair to my side of the family because I would like to invide my aunts and uncles and cousins too. That becomes about 100 people.
I am getting very frustrated with my FMIL. I just want to say F it and we are not having one.
The whole point of this is so our families can finally meet each other. I am thinking of just doing dinner with all the parents.]
I can't afford a catering hall for 100 people!

I think a party for your IMMEDIATE family's to meet and your bridal party to get together is a WONDERFUL idea!!! FMIL, will have to get over it and understand this is a small party to kick off the wedding planning! FH needs to get himself involved to tell his mother... 'back off lady!'

Yeah I wish FH had some balls to stand up to his mother. Now he doesn't even want one. I am changing my mind too. It is too much of a hassle. Also FMIL said that if we have the 40 people party at my mothers, she is going to have a seperate one in staten island so her sisters can come. Which I think is BULL!!!!!! I don't think it is right to single out her family. And I don't want to have two engagement parties. She is driving me crazy!!!!

I think FH should speak to his mother... if it doesn't work out... then maybe your mother should just host a 'dinner' take the word party right out of it.... this way FMIL doesn't think the entire world can be invited. I hope something works out for you!

We didnt want to do anything crazy, so we had the party in my parents back yard, we rented a tent, catered food..90 people showed up! It turned out great! It was a casual atmosphere, people came and went as they pleased....and we maybe spent around 2k

That is ultimately what I want, but I don't have the $$$$$$. I wish I did but the wedding alone is tapping me out. I think I am just going to do the dinner thing.

Dont make yourself crazy....without my FH, we wouldnt of been able to have the eparty because I didnt have much at the time...I was in my girlfriends wedding..and I really wasnt expecting to save $ for that.....If thats all that you can do it will be fine and you will have a good time!
