Uhm, ok... so after some decisions- the e-party is going to be @ mi casa. BUT we are still gonna need to rent some things to make it look pretty and we are having it catered. Add alittle decor and we're looking at aprox. 6-7,000... who pays for this shindig? I think it should be split by both set of parents if god wiling... AM I WRONG???? I would love to know b/c I'm talking to FH about this on the ride to Jericho Terrace tomorrow for the show- it'll take us at least an hour...

Re: e-party... WHO PAYS???
I don't think there's an etiquette rule that says one parents pays.
My parents payed for almost everything, the catering, alcohol, favors, etc. and we payed for decorations and invites. I think in total it was about 2k.
6-7k sounds like a lot for an e-party, why not scale it down or contribute along with your parents and inlaws.

Well it isn't a wedding so they shouldn't be 'covering' their plate.

Re: e-party... WHO PAYS???
our eparty cost about the same - our FILS gave as much as they could and we paid for the rest - it ended up costing us about $2,500 out of pocket - we didnt care - we just wanted to have a party! it was nice that FILS were able to help us out

If neither set of parents offers to throw it for you, you're on your own. I don't think you should ask either set of parents for money for an engagement party.

Re: e-party... WHO PAYS???
I dont expect anything from anyone for my party, if i didnt get a thing it would be OK! I just know my family and friends and for everything we have gone to we have been very, very, very generous, i know they are going to return the favor. But it would be a different story if i got to pocket the whole thing. It is really just helping pay off the party itself. We are close to 6k ourselves, and i would spend more if i had too. Let me tell you, i am not going big, i have about 100p, and it is at a restaurant, no dancing,dj, nothing fancy. Just a buffet and cake. It just happens we invited a lot of people and its not cheap these days. Its cold out, or i would so throw it in my back yard.
