Depends on time of year you are planning on going in my opinion. In the summer, mid afternoon it is going to be hot as hell so IMO later in the day would be better.

My appointment is for 7 but we are taking ours at the beach so we wanted to catch the sunset. Hopefully it wont' be too hot!

i actually did both (long photog nightmare story lol) and i preferred (by a LONG shot) the morning to the afternoon... it was a lot cooler in the morning and the lighting worked out great. if you want to check out my album the pics from my shoot that was in the AM are in there...
the afternoon one was a while back (early june) and even then, it was SO hot (we went at about 4:30ish) and FH was not a happy camper!
so that was just my personal experience-- and how i felt about it. hope that helps you out.
