I have to bring my e-ring in for a repair. The center stone needs to be replaced. The jewelry store contacted us and told us that the stone could be replaced and take a few weeks or they will replace it with the exact same ring and take it with me that day. I'm not sure how I feel about this. Technically, it won't be the same ring FH proposed with. Am I being too sentimential?

Re: E-Ring ?
centerstone -- meaning the MAIN STONE needs to be replaced? why would the diamond itself be damaged -- i do not think that's possible at all, diamonds are hard to damage. you may want them to show you the damages and explain to you how it was damaged.
if the diamond is indeed damaged, I would definitely get the replacement with the same value! i wouldnt want to keep an engagement ring that lost its value -- i'm sure FH will understand.

It's the center stone. I believe I banged it against something. It's a slight crack that you can barely see. I feel the same way as you and I expressed my concerns to her and my FSIL is the manager of the jewelry store and she explained to me that diamonds do chip.

To my knowledge, I thought it was near impossible to crack or break or scratch a diamond. I would get a second opinion before doing anything.

Found this web-surfing.
A diamond is the hardest mineral substance known to man so you might be wondering why we have a page about chipped diamonds... Well, the key word here is mineral. Contrary to popular opinion, diamond is not the hardest substance in the world. In fact, you can scratch the surface of a diamond with a pop-top from a soda can.
Now that we've blown your mind, we might as well finish it off... You can crack a diamond in half trying to scratch glass with it! It's true, if the diamond is at the wrong angle, or if you apply too much pressure, the diamond will cleave in half, maybe worse!

i would definitely get a second opinion -- did you get a certificate with your diamond? unless you have a bad quality diamond, etc.. it shouldnt have damaged. JMHO. i hope all that helps.

Yep. Its a myth that they can't be damaged they sure can. A blow or sharp impact will do it!!

Re: E-Ring ?
Diamonds can chip, scratch and crack........you just have to bump it at the right angle with the right amount of force.
I chipped the girdle of my stone on my car door.

This is BS, it has nothing to do with the quality, you have to remeber you girdle is VERY VERY thin and should be .30ml is the correct cut for it-if you bump it you can chip it. The bottom (which rarely happens b/c of the set) can get chipped as well

That's exactly how I did it to mine!

Moral of the story - watch those car doors ladies! I'm definitely going to try and be more delicate when going in and out of my car. I had no idea diamonds could damage that easily.

My MIL took her original diamond ering to the jeweler recently and she couldnt believe it was possible-she had nicks and scratches all over it. That is part of the reason a lot of jewelers want to put round stones in a 6 prong instead of a 4, it covers more area and make it harder for things to dink it.
I always thought the same thing until I basically proved myself wrong

Re: E-Ring ?
Definitely get a second opinion and ask to look at it under the magnifying glass to see the damage with your own eyes. Are they replacing it for free? Sounds a bit sketch to me. But I do agree with the other ladies, if you have a very thin girdle it can chip.

Is it a CERTIFIED stone? If so, you should have it's paperwork....But how do you 'damage' a center stone. The only thing that can scratch or cut a diamond, is a diamond, being the hardest on the mineral scale. It is possible if your stone had a MAJOR inclusion that might have caused a facture from within....but you would have been able to see that with the naked eye. 'Diamonds' don't break...per se... At minimum I would get an appraisal, if nothing else to find out more about your stone...
