E-Ring

E-Ring

Hey girls-

My E-ring is white gold and is already starting to get tainted yellow around the band. I don't wear it when I'm cleaning or go in the pool but still it's turning yellow. I took it to Zales (where my FH got it) and they told me how white gold isn't really white and how's it's originally yellow and how one's body chemistry can effect it and blah blah. I'm sure that's true, but what I really wanted them to tell me was a way I can fix this problem.

Has anyone had this problem? What can we do? We have a lifetime guarantee.

thanks so much!!

Did you ask Zales what you can do? They might be the best person to ask since you have a lifetime guarantee. Sorry I can't be much more help! GL

I'm so sad because FH spent a lot on the ring and I've only had it since February. :( :(

why didn't Zales mention dipping or anything? makes me upset. I feel as long as you have already spent money and aren't going for a new purchase they don't help you. This was in the Roosevelt field mall. Maybe there's a better store I can go to? If they aren't helpful next time I go in, they won't be getting our business for the wedding bands.

I believe they dip it in rhodium. I know a lot of people who did this once a year. That was my fear with white gold, but I guess our only option is to get it dipped from time to time.

You're right. Rhodium is a process....there really is no such thing as 'white gold.' And..because the color of pure gold is a very light yellow.... they use rhodium to make it 'white gold.' Gold, in it of itself, it always trying to get back to it's nature state which is the light yellow color....My ring is also white gold and it happened to me already...but that's also cause I'm a tard and was using the old wives tale and using dish detergent to clean it -- which made the diamonds gorgeous but started to change the color of the gold! Needless to say, I no longer use it! Ha. Your jeweler will definitely be able to polish it and use rhodium to make it shiny and new when you're ready. If for any reason they can't, many jewelers do.....

Thanks so much!! this is very helpful. I'm assuming Zales is a big jeweler and can do it. When I'm back in the states I will go and ask the details.

Just in case they give me issues, can anyone recommend a good jeweler in Nassau or Western Suffolk that does dipping?

thanks!

This happend to my e-ring and now its happened to my wedding bad as well. We brought my e-ring back to the jeweler and they rhodium plated and polished it. We did this for my e-ring back in Jan and its still white.

You should bring it back to Zales and ask them to take care of it. I don't know why they didn't offer to do that when you went there.

this actually happened to me as well right after i got engaged. i ended up just taking it to tri-county and getting it dipped for $20 at one of the vendors there. it really is not an uncommon issue. hth!

thats great to hear you got good results! I dont know why they didn't offer me any information when I first noticed the problem. I guess that's just the risk you take with white gold. Thanks for your help!

Re: E-Ring

My ring is also white gold and started to do that about six months after I got it. I also dont where cleaning or in water. The jeweler where FH got my ring said that is normal for white gold and that every 6-8 months it should be cleaned and re-applied with the white gold.

My jeweler does it for free on the spot.

I dont know about Zales though...but do not let that ring leave your sight!!!

Re: E-Ring

I had two rings FH bought me that were white gold and they turned also. I went to a family jeweler and they told me Pure white gold with turn yellow after a while- gold is naturally yellow so they only way to get it to stay 'white' is to put a little platinum in it. That way it wont ever turn. The easy fix was having it dipped- however- that doesn't last that long depending on how often you ear the ring.

I thought the guy was nuts when he told me this. I did have it redipped in white gold with platinum and haven't haven't had an issue since.

Re: E-Ring

My parents rings are white gold and they have never taken them off for 43 years! Both rings only show a little bit of wear but are not turning yellow at all! It all depends on the % of other metals that the jewler uses. I wouldn't go back to zales. I'd talk to a different jewler and get another opinion.

unfortunately, they are exactly correct. White gold does turn a tinge yellow with your body chemistry. You can have it reset to Platinum (for a true silvery white gold look), or you can have it dipped (plated) into platinum.. but plating will last about 6months, and you will need to keep doing it.

Mine also turned color a few months after I got engaged. I brought it right to the jeweler where FH bought it and they dipped it for me for free. I haven't had any problems with it since.

yeah this is normal for white gold to happen to - its actually plated with rhodium and you will need to have it redipped/replated from time to time and it will look like new - don't worry there isn't anything wrong with your ring

Re: E-Ring

very normal. Mine happens to the band part on underside. I suspect it's caused by sweat, lotion, and soap. I'd say mine happened 6 months in so maybe get it dipped twice a year. it's not a lot. 20 bucks maybe. I suspect it happens more in summer.

This is why I got my band in Platinum. I plan on wearing the band more b/c I take the train late at night sometimes from work....

Re: E-Ring

You have to get it dipped in Rhodium again. That's what covers the yellow gold to make it white. There are places you can have it done. I have no idea about price though. Look into it I know that's how it is done
