E-ring issue...upset (sorry its long)

I just need to vent a little about this weekend....

So....Im in the car and I look down at my hand like I often do .....BAM...one of my diamonds in my setting was missing...instead of sparkles all I was was a gaping dark hole. I, of course, freaked and cried. FH didnt initially want to go back to where he bought the ring in Jersey so instead we went to the Queens Center Mall by my house. No one in the mall would repair a ring not purchased by them...except for Zales.

Not to sound cheap...but its a small side stone...and they wanted almost $300 and it would take 7-10 days. FH told me that the entire setting cost him $500 (of course all the money went into the center stone). $500 for the entire setting which has 12 small stones..and they want to charge almost $300 to replace one. She said that it was because of the quality of the sidestones and because one of the prongs needed to be repaired.

In the end, I didnt leave it there just because I felt like $300 was too high to charge in comparison to the cost of the entire setting....now we are probably gonna have no choice but to go back to Jersey where he purchased it from (althought the 1 year warranty has already expired). FH doesnt want me to wear my ring until it is fixed because we aren't sure if losing this one stone has 'loosened' up any of the other stones. I am so beyond upset. I am so upset by this...I feel like I 'broke' my ring and now I am going to have to be without it for a time while it gets repaired. I guess I feel like that because he told me that I am a 'brut' to my jewelry. To make things worse, money is really tight for us now so FH was not happy about having to spend money to have this repaired since as he so gently put it 'well you have to have it fixed by the wedding right'. I was so hurt I just told him to forget it and I just wont wear my Ering on our wedding day. I know he just said it b/c he was upset and overreacting...but he made me feel like I did this b/c I wasnt careful enough.
He doesnt understand why any of this upsets me. Can anyone recommend a place in Queens that will repair rings not originally purchased there? I would like to get other quotes before we go back to the place it was purchased. TIA

I don't know any places in Queens, but I just wanted to say that it is SOOOOO not your fault! I understand why you are upset. Good luck and keep us posted

it's not your fault! diamonds do get loose and since none of us are professional jewelers, how would we know?! maybe call around the diamond district and see if anyone does repairs? you may get a fairer price on the replacement diamond. also, see if your insurance covers it.

I'm sorry that you are going through this...but honestly, this isn't your fault. IMO I think it would be best to go back to where the original ring was purchased, because it sounds like it was 'defective' which is THEIR responsibility to fix, warranty expired or not. IMO I think Zales and any other jewelry store will charge what they want if the ring wasn't purchased from them..after all they are repairing it when you didn't purchase it there. But...if you feel you want to get it done locally, then there is nothing wrong with trying. It's not your fault...so don't feel that way. But I don't think it's a 'Zales' issue. The 7-10 days thing is because they don't have jewelers on site, and have to send everything out. The only store that has one on site is on 34th street. My e-ring was purchased from them and if something goes wrong w/it...they replace it. Good luck!

Ok...so I called the place we bought it from...pretty much they can't give me any info over the phone...we have to go in. Before I go there, I would like to go to a place or two in the diamond district...just for comparison.

Can anyone recommend a place???

you should check with your insurance comp to see if they cover it. then you could prob go anywhere to get it fixed.

We just bought our wedding bands in the diamond district this past weekend at Raffi Fine jewlery at 570 Fifht Avenue and 47th Street. (entrance on corner) Its one of the first booths that you walk in on the left hand side. (the second one i thnk). Both he and his assistant were very pleasant, he had diiferent quality of items for whatever you price range and style Dont know if he rpairs but you can get a referral.

I agree though that if you have insurance, put in a claim.

if you dont have it yet, get it right after you get it repaired for any future problems.

Good luck.

Definately go to someone you know!!!!!!

Some random jeweler could easily and unfortunately swap your stone for one of lesser quality and you may not know the difference. Be careful!!!!
