E-rings & Interviews

Re: E-rings & Interviews

It's not fair or legal, but it's still what employers do. Being engaged for an employer means that the employee will not be focused on her job but on wedding planning instead. I wouldn't risk NOT getting a job just because of a stupid interviewer's biased and wrong opinion of me. If I was worried, I would not wear the ring on interviews.

This is really interesting.

I've never EVER imagined that someone would be discriminated against for being engaged. I work on Wall Street and being engaged/married puts you in the 'she's really a grown up' class.

Employers should think that you're in for the long haul, soon (if not already) there will be a mortgage and children and you will have to give work- your all! You can't just get up and leave and do what you want as easily as when you were single. That's the feedback I get. Honestly, when I interview people and see that a young woman in business school is engaged....I think- she has her sh*t together!

I must work around a different crowd, I guess. Everyone was thrillled when I got engaged....and in my industry it's not a given to pop out kids (if at all), there's so few women that I don't think my managers are even concerned about that. They are excited that I will join their ranks. As far as comments regarding my ring- I have a Tiffany Legacy ring and the men patted me on the back when I told them FH asked my father before asking me...that impressed people- not my ring. Their wives all wear Tiffany too so no big deal?

Hope this helps...wear your ring and wear it proudly.

ETA- you know....I'm wondering if this has to do with a possible age difference? I'm 30 so everyone seems to feel this is the 'right time', I'm done with business school, I'm a VP so this is next? Lol, it's stupid. If anyone makes comments to you younger brides- they are jealous! Don't waste your energy and honestly- you don't want to work for people like that anyway. Yes, times are hard but we spend SO much time at work....you want to at least like and at best respect who you work for.

i was engaged years ago when i started my job where i am now, and when i interviewed i had my ring on. i started my job a week later and did not have my ring on at the time because it was being reset, and i got comments from my boss saying 'oh we thought you had an engagement ring on during your interview, and were hesitant to hire you because we thought you might be popping out kids soon'. i was like yeah, i am engaged, so.................. it was def f*cked up and employers DO think like this, its your choice how you want to handle it. Had i known that, i would not have worn my ring and when i got the job they woulda been the suckers, not me.

Wow that is really sad, and its definitely unethical, I almost feel like that is harassment.
