Early Gifts - Confusion.... (kinda long)

Early Gifts - Confusion.... (kinda long)

Ok, so we're in that stage now where the bridal shower is over, invites are out, wedding is 1 month away....and gifts off the registry are coming in the mail.

Some were from people that couldn't come to the shower, and are less expensive gifts, so I can assume those are shower gifts....

But, we've gotten some pricier items from a few people, and I don't know if this is the 'wedding' gift, or like a pre-wedding engagement gift? (Sounds strange to me since the wedding is close, but we didn't have an engagement party so some people tell me this is just how it is....)

Here's an example: My best friend for 20 years got married in April, and FH and I gave them a pretty generous monitary gift. They live in St Louis. Today we got a gift in the mail from them, with a generic BBB card (To a lifetime of happiness), and though it's a VERY nice knife set that wasn't cheap - we gave more to them then that cost......... And the best friend is not the type to cheap out or anything, I'm thinking we'll get something at the wedding too, though I'm not going to depend on it or anything. And if we don't that's fine with me, it's just confusing me now!

Anyone else have this problem? So - aside from the late shower gifts, do I send a Thank You note now for the other gifts? Or wait until the wedding is over? Because then we'll have the pics from the photographer.....

UGH, it'd be so much easier if gifts came labeled. 'Shower', 'engagement', 'wedding'.

That is so funny - we just got a nice gift from fortunoff from someone from out of state - i dont know if it is late engagement present or an early wedding gift - at the point i had gotten the gifts invites were not sent out but these people were given a save the date - I AM SO CONFUSED
i completely agree with what you are saying! I ended up sending a generic thank you - we are waiting for the wedding and if there is on gift i will just send anohter thank you thanking them again for the gift! hope you arent more confused !

Anytime you receive a gift send a TY card. After the wedding, when you get the pictures send another TY card. This way they're getting a TY right away so they know you received it and they'll also get to the 'real' TY and will be able to see what you looked like for your wedding, which is esp nice for OOT guests who can't make it to the wedding.

Good call, thanks! That way I can keep this TYN a generic thank you, and then they'll get the real one later on, thanking them for coming (if they attend), and all that fun stuff.

Though I loath writing thank yous, I'd rather write more then I have to if it'll save me any stress!

this happened to me, and I made a mistake... I got a generous gift in the mail from my MILs friend ..it was right after the shower and she did not attend... I assumed it was a shower gift-
I sent a thank you card for the 'shower' gift...
Shower was end of April

wedding came-her and her husband came- they did not give a card/ or a gift

MIL told me that what I thought was the shower gift was my wedding gift- (wedding was early July)

I didn't know whether or not to send another thank you card....so I just did...and said thank you for attending our wedding-etc... etc...

Whether or not they are wedding gifts, thank yous should be sent now.

If you figure out they are wedding gifts and the couple comes to the wedding, send a second thank you after the wedding... but if the gift comes a month early, don't wait until after the wedding to send a thank you. Send a thank you now AND after the wedding.

I would say it is either your wedding gift or part of your wedding gift. I am not positive about that though. I only got 4 or 5 things off my registry. DH and I both come from Italian families that are big on monitary gifts.

I totally agree. We sent out TYs for all gifts we received prior to 10 days before the wedding (if it came in the 10 days before, we just sent the 'real' TY out to them because things were a little hectic).

We sent all of the people who sent wedding gifts or attended the wedding 'real' TYs (even if they had already gotten one or didn't send a gift - TY for attending).

We then also sent out TYs after the 'real' ones if someone sent us a gift after we sent the 'real' ones and they hadn't given us a gift before that.
