hello when you already know who is on the phone (friend, family)? I can see if a business or store is calling you and you say hello but if you knew its Jill from down the block..say Hi Jill

Usually if know who it is, family or friend, I'll just say 'hi there.' This seems to confuse some people, esp some of the older people in my family though and they get kind of flustered and have to say 'Hi, Pam? This is xxx.'

I usually just say like hey you or hey whats going on...or perhaps an inside joke or so!

I do this too. What's the point in acting like you didn't look at the caller id before you picked up the phone?

I say 'Hey' if it's someone I know, and 'Hello' if I don't recognize the number.
