Economy/family

Original post by florezpeeps

Every time I see the 08' mommy thread I can't help but feel a little blue. For as long as I can remember, I thought that after getting married, I'd get pregnant. But the economy is so bad, dh and I are barely cutting it, so a baby just doesn't seem to be in the near future. Everybody expected me to have a hunnymoon baby (especially my mom *sigh*) but at this rate I can't even see a one yr wedding anniversary baby! I don't know, feeling blue about it and just wanted to share

Although it's smart to wait until you're financially ready for a child.... I kinda feel like nobody ever really IS 'ready' (unless you're one of those annoying wealthy people). FH & I also don't want to begin a family until we've got a house and such. But i fear that if we keep that attitude, we'll wait too long and it'll eventually be too late to even have kids. My parents started our family off in a small apartment and then when i was 3, we moved into the house we're still in now. So my attitude is NOT to wait too long. I understand that the economy is worse now than it was then, but i still don't want to hold off TOO long, so I don't think we will.

Hang in there, ok? When the time is right for you both, you'll have that baby. And it'll be worth the wait

This is kind of how I feel. I don't know if Joe and I will ever be where we really want to be. My parents raised 4 kids in an apartment. I want to be able to give my children more than that but I am afraid if we wait it will be more difficult for us. We are both 33 I don't know how much longer we can both wait. It will happen for you when you are both ready...

I agree that it will never be the perfect time to have a kid but theres also a difference between maybe not the perfect time and a real bad time to have a kid. I feel there will always be reasons to postpone having a baby so certain reasons you should just ignore bc you can make it work. Other reasons, such as not having a secure job, someone out of work, not even having a place can make it very hard. Like right now i am out of work, so theres no way i want to bring a baby into this world when DH is the only one working and he would have to pay all the bills and raising the child, that would be wrong of us. I do have a 2nd interview for a job and seems like it went very well, start date isnt until a few more weeks too but hopefully by end of the year i will have a job. But even just starting a new job, i dont want to just jump the gun and go for it. Well i want to do other things first so theres other reasons.

I feel the same exact way ...We cant even afford a house ...we live in a one bedroom apt ..where are we putting a baby?? its so upsetting I want a little one so bad

It can be done. We're still in a one bedroom apt and expecting in Feb. We're going to be in the apt until the baby is about 1 1/2 for the purpose of saving money. You'd be surprised what you can make work. Will it be tight? Sure. But we're ok with it, it's only for a little while, if that's the only thing, don't let it stop you.

i feel the same way. honestly, a few months ago i felt like we should hold off. my job is in jeopardy but luckily DH is in a union.

i am no spring chicken & honestly don't have much time. we live in a 1 BR also & we just may have to struggle a little bit. babies don't take up much room. i would luv to have been in a house first. but you can't always plan on things going smoothly.

i am not pregnant yet & we are trying. but i decided we are not putting off our dream for a job.

hang in there praying that we all get through these tough times .

Its hard these days.. Many ppl feel the same way.. One thing I suggest from my brother and his wife..Is that when you want sometime you work hard for it.. They wanted to start there family right after the wedding and it worked out.. Just stay positive and things will fall into place. Don't hold yourself back for anything..

as you could see...you are so not alone

I feel the same...and I also go back and forth....youll know when the time is right...my parents were far from where me and DH are financially and they lived in a railroad apt. in BKLYN....and I think I turned out okay

when we think too much about it we talk ourselves out of it...I know because I have been doing the same thing....

I know it is terrible but I think many of us feel that we should hold out for a more certain future

Even though DH works in finance which is a struggling industry today, he is very lucky that his company is small and seems to be responsible. They stopped the loan department a long time ago and weren't hit hard with the financial mess, in fact they are reopening the loan department and expanding.

I work as a nurse and I'v noticed less overtime is available (not that I work OT) but I have a feeling that they will hire less and be willing to work shorter.. if people have no jobs they have no insurance so hospitals may have a hard time getting paid.

As for the baby thing, I am going back to school. I wanted to wait a little while before having a baby anyway. I always wanted to have a house first but that doesn't seem possible. When I talk to my father he always says there's some new and unexpected bill regarding the house. Plus taxes etc. For this reason I am quite content in my one bedroom apartment. I know my monthly bills and if something breaks I call the super.

Will I probably spend some time in a one bedroom apartment with a baby? Possibly. But we actually plan on moving into a two bedroom when the time comes this way we can continue to save for a home.

I'm in no rush for home ownership and in no rush for motherhood even though I want both. I know life will be more enjoyable if I don't pile too much onto my plate.

I feel the same way. My sister called me the other day to talk about how annoying my mom is talking how she wants us to have a baby now. I told her to tell her to stop b/c with the economy I might have to adopt an 18 and tell them you are on your own hunnie!
