I have been looking at videographers for a couple of weeks and I hear that some will edit your video without your input (but let you keep the raw footage tape) while others will let you select which scenes you want in the video. I saw someone a couple of days ago who had a very nice package (for under $2000) yet will edit the video without our input. My FI really doesn't want a video so this is not a major issue for him. Should I just trust the videographer to edit the video or should I find someone else? I will say that on my list of importance, video is not at the top - probably in the middle.
THank you for your advice! I will be asking more decisions as I have become indecisive about EVERYTHING!

Re: Editing videos
I would trust the videographer. They do this as a living so they know what goes in and what does not go in the edited version.

Re: Editing videos
Having your input on the video would probably double the total amount of time it would take for a videographer to do the edit - so if that is important to you, you are probably going to have to pay more.
I would just trust the videographer and keep the raw footage. You can always do your own edit in a few years when the software is easier.

Re: Editing videos
Thank you! I feel much better now! I'm always afraid of making the wrong decision that I will later regret. You only get married once (generally) so you can only make these decisions once.

I hadn't even thougth about the raw footage...but I am leaving it in the hands of the videographer...he is a professional and that's what he was hired for.

Re: Editing videos
Actually, it is really easy to edit your own video footage NOW. All you need is a copy of Sonic Foundry's Video Factory software, and a digital camera to input (download) the footage from the source to the computer.
You can edit scenes, change the chronology, add music and text, make scenes in black and white, sepia or full color.
My husband made a fully edited video out of 4 hours of raw footage from our honeymoon trip. I think it's better than our wedding video!

Re: Editing videos
We are getting the raw footage and the edited copy...
We are letting the videographer do his thing with the edited copy since that is what he does. But, I did call him after the wedding to request that several things were included (the toasts, a specific song...)!

Re: Editing videos
Stef - I am not sure but, the easiest way might be to hook up a DV camera to your TV, and record the VHS tape or DVD onto the DV tape. Then hook the DV camera to your PC and download the footage in sections.
This is assuming that you have a DV camera in the first place. I'm not sure how to do it otherwise. Lemme ask hubby if he has any other ideas, and I'll get back to you.

Re: Editing videos
My FI would love the idea of editing our wedding video. He loves playing on the computer and once he gets his digital camera from me (either for Hannukah or our wedding), he won't stop playing with it. Of course, he won't care about making a better wedding video as much as playing with electronic equipment!

Re: Editing videos
We chose to edit ours because it was a uniting of two cultures and I was scared that my family would say things on the tape in their native language and the videographer would erase it or something. Since we had to edit it, I waited a long time to do the editing and then it took us about three hours to do!!! BUT, it all turned out perfect and I couldn't have imagined not getting a video.
We used Skylight Video and we were really happy with them! To have the raw video and edit it ourselves was totally our decision---our videographer would have done the editing if we wanted to.
