Elliptical Vs. treadmill

What's the difference in what they do for you...I mean do they both do the same thing or is one for losing weight and the other to tone. I never know which one to use when I am at the gym.
Thanks!

I feel I get a better workout on the treadmill. I work a lot harder and burn a lot more calories when I run.

I love the Elliptical better then treadmill..I feel that I get a better workout..With the Elliptical you can choose which you body part you want to concentrate on (ie. gluts, hamstrings, quads) On the treadmill you can increase incline which you can also do on elliptical...It is all preference though

I had surgery on my ankle a year and a half ago and my doctors and physical therapist told me I was better off using the elliptical because it puts less stress on your knees and ankles.

I use both so my workouts are not boring doing the same thing, plus it is good to change up your routine.

I have really bad knees and used to use the treadmill, but had to stop b/c of the impact on my knees. My doctor said to use the elliptical, since your not stressing your joints as much as a treadmill....

Both machines are great cardio machines. I would mix it up a bit, do about 15 - 30 mins on each machine. Add small weight (3-5 lbs) to tone your arms if you like. If you have trouble with your knees keep away from jogging which will hard on your knees.

The treadmill works your whole body therefore causing you to train harder which leads to more calories burned. The ellipt. is good because it is non-impact and takes is easy on your joints but I do not feel that you work as hard. The key to success is variety. Treadmill, bike, ellipt. weights and classes. I read that Madonna never does the same thing two days in a row. ie: jog monday, bike tuesday.
